Reed Hastings is an IT and Software entrepreneur who co-founded Netflix, an entertainment company that provides streaming and DVD-by-mail media services. The early years of Hastings were vivid, bright and full of experiences. After high school, he spent a year selling Rainbow vacuum cleaners door to door. After that Hastings decided to complete his education at Bowdoin College. He majored in mathematics and received his bachelor's degree from the college in 1983. After graduation, he joined Peace Crops where he gained his communication, teamwork and risk-taking skills. After returning from the Peace Corps in 1988 Hastings joined Stanford University to further his education where he earned his master’s degree in computer science. He worked a number of jobs before the founding of Netflix. Besides the serving at Peace Crops he worked as a software developer at Adaptive Technology. A while later he quit that job to start his own business, a Pure Software company which made tools for software developers. The company was growing rapidly in terms of revenue and number of employees. However, after going public in 1995 and several merging and acquisitions, Pure was acquired by Rational Software in 1997. Hastings then began thinking of establishing a DVD-rental company to facilitate the process of renting movies where customers could easily create a list of movies and TV shows online, and then exchanging DVDs by mail. The flood of affordable DVD players into the consumer electronics market makes it very promising idea for Hastings. Indeed, a company that delivers lightweight DVDs to the customers by mail, could be the best alternative to the video store and its strict return
