In the article “Why Colleges Shower Their Students with As,” Brent Staples explains why colleges give out excellent grades to students that have not earned them. The author gives examples of university issues, reasoning for inflation from a student and professor standpoint, and then suggests a reasonable solution to the grade point average boosting. Staples succeeds at fearing the reader that the system will not change and higher education will become devalued. Staples starts by explaining what goes on in universities that creates conflict.
I hoped that it would be a class that would teach me new techniques for writing. At the same time, I was concerned that I might not learn anything of consequence in the class. I was already aware (from results in other classes) that there were improvements I needed to make in my writing. I was uncertain, however, if this class would help. Now, at the end of the course, I feel that I have improved as a writer and have had a positive experience.
In conclusion, the most significant concept I want to improve is putting all my thoughts together and organized into a well written paper. I also commit to putting a larger effort into accepting my mistakes and fixing them. I know this class will prepare me for the future for the reason that my struggle with communicating in writing is not something I can avoid. It is a skill that I will need everyday, through college, through a career, and throughout my whole
I came into my first college writing class feeling prepared thanks to you and your investment in me as a student in your AP Lang class. I developed as a writer more than I ever had in your class, and it definitely helped me in my college writing class this semester. I already knew how important it was to revise and continuously critically think about my writing, as well as the importance of multiple drafts and peer review. My English 110 class this semester was very similar to yours because we also did multiple drafts where I could revise my paper as many times as needed. The big difference was that the focus was on different genres and how to appeal to those, which was something new compared to my high school English courses.
The weekly reading assignments were very helpful. Some of the topics were great refreshers of common mistakes made when writing; these knocked some of the cobwebs in my mind loose. The other topics with sample writings gave me an idea of what to do. The instructor feedback and the revision recommendations were probably the most helpful tools in my composition process.
Taking the time to look back at my writings from the beginning of the year I realized there were many things I needed to improve on. From little things like grammar and mechanics, to descriptive word choice and organization. Throughout the year I have developed many strengths and held on to some weaknesses. Reflecting back I noticed there are sets of things that need to be addressed. I had many weaknesses this year as a writer.
Throughout the term there has been many writing assignments —big or small— that helped reflect my writing process or the process itself. In the beginning of the course I felt like I was an “ok” writer, but lacked some skills such as: organization, sentence variety, and vocabulary. Also, I did not like to write and had a feeling of dislike when forced to write. I felt like I improved on everything I wanted and was seen throughout the semester. I know how to organize my ideas, the worksheets given in class to work on sentence variety really helped, and vocabulary was built on some level.
In my four years of high school I have taken advanced, honors, and two years of advanced placement English courses. High school has so far prepared me to write fluently and effectively, it has also primarily prepared me for the kind of writing that was required of me in this course. College-level writing is important to me because it has allowed me the chance to further my writing skills and knowledge of different genres of essays. Just this course alone has already taken my writing ability way beyond what I have accomplished at a high school level. College-level writing courses are important because they will teach me how to better convey thoughts, ideas, and facts in simple and clear language.
Being a part of this course has helped me improve my writing in different areas such as my grammar, editing, and planning. Being that, when I got back my teacher 's essay edited the first thing I noticed was all my grammar and my paragraph structure were all off. As a result, after I turn my essays in I always review my paragraphs and sometimes I even ask my friends to read over my essays to see if I need to improve either my paragraph structure, thesis or conclusion. Another, way I tried to improve my grammar, editing skills, and planning is
As the semester is finishing up, I look back at this class and reflect my learning and thoughts about this class. I look back and see how much I’ve learned, such as the six plus 1 traits, word choice, and placings of words. These teachings will help me throughout my life, such as scholarship applications, college classes, job applications, and so much more. My thoughts on writing has changed dramatically.
During the course of this semester, I feel that I have grown substantially as a writer. I think that I could improve even more with practice as well as using a few resources. This class has helped me drastically by improving my writing structure but I think it could have been even better if I had spent my time more efficiently. Overall this class has been very beneficial to me and I think it will really help me in the future. When I started this class I took a completely different approach to writing a paper.
Writing has always been an issue but yet interesting subject of mine. As hard as I try and write essays, and papers I just can’t get the hang of writing. But after taking this class, I did learn different writing technique and improved my writing proficiency, material body of formatting, and how to uncovering and properly use sources. Through class exams, essays, and a research paper, I was able to learn new writing skills. Although I have learned a variety of things, my writing still needs improvement.
My Writing Experience In previous courses, my writing skills have been mediocre or just enough to pass the class. Throughout the duration of this course, I have written a variety of papers using different techniques and skills. Previously I would write assuming that the only audience would be my instructor. This course has helped me realize that there are many steps and skills involved with writing a well-organized and easy to comprehend essay.
There are other areas in my writing that I have improved on. I have improved on my grammar, verb constructions, use of verb tenses and organizational skills to make my writing flow better when reading. My overall progress in completing this ten weeks course was wonderful. Every steps and skills I learned in this English class will help me to improve on my writing skills in my other classes and will also help me in my future
Writing project 3 has shown me the importance of writing something that is of interest for you, an issue that you are passionate about. I think that I have started to get somewhat better at the structuring of my writing and using outlines before I jump into a draft. I am no longer as scared and hesitant to write, as I was the first writing project. I think a good goal that I accomplished from this project was using diverse sources in my writing. I was able to utilize a magazine post, newspaper article and research journals to form my argument and provide support.
