I’m choosing the Service Learning Project and how it connects to the three articles. The Service Learning Project is going to talk to students are education and how its important for their future. In William Cronon’s Only Connect article is about freedom and growth in educations, and how students should have different opportunities and that they should have a say in what classes they take. Also why its important to have an education. This connects with the project that in my Service Learning Project I’m going to be talking to students about the importance of educations and how it should be your choice.
Finally, I imagine that I will secure more confidence in my knowledge, in addition to gaining a viable transformative experience. Career Goals: Describe what your Career Goals are and how you plan to use this experience to further those Goals. My goal is to be a military social worker. In the last
I will be able to excel even further in my learning capabilities. The strict emphasis on learning will allow me to more deeply understand concepts that are vital to my future profession. I love learning new things and being able to build relationships with others that value the importance of learning as much as I do. I hope to be able to research in more depth the impact that race has on the lives of people from different races. This would include how it impacts their education, families, and jobs.
This year, I want to ask more questions during my lessons and challenge myself more. I hope this year, I will become a strong
I think this reading, “Building Partnerships for Service Learning”, effectively sets up a framework to use as a tool in order to reflect on one’s own service work. While it does not tell you how to build partnerships, it instead gives benchmarks to describe what those relationships should look like. What most resonated with me is the important idea that service learning is not providing services on behalf of the community, but partnering with communities “to meet collective needs”. These relationships need to be collaborations, where they are equally beneficial for both the institution and the community around it. Universities should not go into communities with a savior complex, instead service should provide a learning opportunity for the
Being part of Child Development has taught me to work in groups and learn to work with challenging personalities. I have also learned to work with challenging behaviors but through the challenges I have managed to complete given tasks . Being part of Child Development has not only help me learn how to work through challenging situations but ,it has also given me the opportunity to discover my passion for children. Many shook their heads when I told them my goal; to become a preschool teacher. Of course I myself had doubts, however my doubts soon vanished once I started volunteering at a child care center in my community.
My Service Learning Project had been planned accordingly thanks to my family, I had volunteered with my family at the homeless shelter to serve food and give necessities to the homeless before Christmas time. My personal involvement with the homeless was absolutely attending their priorities such as toiletry, food, assistance, etc. as well as providing a warm hand to be open minded with. I previously had friends who relied on the homeless shelter, and I had credible knowledge on what the homeless were asking for in terms of help. I would engage in involvement or communication with some of the homeless to not only provide their necessities, but positive social interaction.
The article, “Food Waste Is Becoming Serious Economic and Environmental Issue, Report Says,” by Ron Nixon, talks about food waste and of plans on how to stop it. Specifically, Nixon argues that there are millions of people all over the country that don’t have enough to eat. Also that there are people that go to bed hungry most days, while others are throwing away extra scraps they didn’t eat. Nixon writes about the tons of food thrown in the trash every week, resulting in economic and environmental issues. Also about how the Earth’s landfills then get filled up with even more garbage.
I hope to take the skills I have learned from these many activities and apply them to whatever I end up doing with my
I see myself transitioning very successfully from student to developing professional. I am very excited to apply the skills and knowledge I have gained over the past three years in the field. I am also excited and eager to begin my life as a social worker. I have learned so much from my professors as well as from working with my peers. As a student, I have learned how to be culturally competent when working with individuals/families that come from different cultures and learned skills to help make them feel comfortable working with me.
I am very dedicated to help. I want to help everyone. I will be honored to become a Nurse Aid and be everything I can be in the medical field. I will offer my services when needed and do as much as possible. Everything I have learned is pushing me to exceed my goals.
The Profession of Social Work as a Career Goal Graduating from high school, I have always had a passion working with kids. I never put into thought exactly what I wanted to do with kids, all I knew was that I wanted to work with kids. At first, my career choice was to become a midwife. There were several complications down the road, in which I could no longer pursue that career choice.
Service Learning and Service Emphasis Week My highs during SEW week first occurred to me when we first arrived in the orphanage and how the kids were cheering and hugging us as if we hadn’t seen each other for years, these kids never knew us but acted and trusted as like they did. One of my favorite moments I recall was when we (as a team) were playing with the kids, and just seeing them smile was enough to make our hearts pound with joy. We spent most of our time teaching them, and I remember them always getting my name right and they would call the rest of my friends “mzungu” meaning “whites”.
I want to strive to be a better person, so I could make a change in a young person’s life and know when I go home on a night, that I made a difference and that's why I want to pursue my career as a social worker. When I realized that I wanted to be a social worker, I was in my junior year of high school. I knew I wanted to help people, children especially, but I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to go into. I thought I wanted to be in Neonatology or another profession like it. When I first witnessed a social worker, I was getting a treatment in the hospital and saw a social worker working with a family who child had a broken pelvis.
Through the readings of the last week, I have learned a great deal about ‘Service Learning’. It is a combination of teaching and learning approach for teaching public health issues and improving health literacy. It is an integration of academic learning and community services to strengthen civic engagement. It is helpful in promoting cooperation, teamwork, civic responsibility, solving complex problems etc. (Service learning, 2016).
