The second professional event I, Lindsey Tradewell, attended this Semester was the Alpha Phi Parent Winter Formal. The formal was held December 8th, 2015 from 6:30PM-10PM. My sorority held a formal dinner to thank our parents for the past four years as my class is now seniors. I was lucky enough to invite my two siblings and sister in law, and I also got the opportunity to meet and connect with other senior’s parents. My class is about 40 girls, so the attendance was a rather large group, and the attire was formal. The Alpha Phi Formal was held at US Bank Stadium, which was an amazing venue. As an Alpha Phi, there is a sense of belonging and being a social unit. In-group membership is when one feels they share a common bond, ideologies, come from a common background, and resemble others of the group (294). During the past four years, I have really grown with my class, and we have created a bond where we share this common membership, which our past experiences have brought us to. In a certain way, if he would like to admit it or not, he somewhat had a stereotype of what a sorority event entails. Stereotypes are mental images that form from past experiences and are used to place people into social categories (86). I was very excited I had the opportunity to bring my brother to the Formal, and show him how being in a sorority is more than he might expect. Throughout the speeches given by our president about our philanthropy, efforts we make within our Greek community, and leadership improvements and events we hold for ourselves, I believe my brother now has a better understanding of why I participated as a Alpha Phi the past four years, I have really grown as a person with the support of the other
