Being a resident of Bergen County, New Jersey, I visit New York City frequently and unfortunately witness homelessness every time. It breaks my heart to see people living and begging on the streets, but it really hits me hard when I see a homeless a young adult. This summer I also watched an old documentary directed by Martin Bell called Streetwise, about homeless teens in Seattle. It followed about five kids surviving on the streets, but mainly had a focus on a 14-year-old prostitute whose name on the street was “Tiny”. After watching this documentary about kids trying to get by while living on the street, I began to research everything I could find about the homeless youth and found it very sad and interesting, if only there was something
Joining Key Club this year has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my high school career. The summer before senior year, I started volunteering at Chelsea Public Library with the intention of joining Key Club when the school year started. With 18 hours of community service under my belt I was determined to complete my 100 hours of community service by the end of senior year. Most members have three to four years to complete these hours, and as a senior, I was trying to accomplish what most would think impossible. The skills I have learned from Key Club will carry me throughout life and will help me aid others in the future.
Homelessness is one the most ignored problems in the United States with citizen and politician. Homeless people are walked by and ignored. Nobody ever thinks that they will be homeless. Due to the economy, people live paycheck to paycheck making house payments very difficult. Most people will want to believe most homeless people are drug addicts or alcoholics, but most people will be surprise to know that it is no all true.
We have made it our mission to reach out to the homeless in the Fort Worth community and its’ surrounding counties. According to a survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in 2016, there were approximately 1,924 people either living unsheltered, in emergency shelters or in transitional housing in both Tarrant and Parker County. Many of these individuals are struggling with mental health disorders, abuse, abandonment, and loneliness. With your help we can provide the basic necessities such as warm blankets, coats, socks, undergarments, toiletries, backpacks, sleeping bags. In addition, we can provide them with community resource information that will help them rebuild their lives.
I helped organize charity walks, cleaned beaches, volunteered at ASL seminars, and delivered food to construction workers. Most of my work, however, was at the MeCats cat shelter, where over 200 cats had been rescued off the streets, or from abusive households. The cat shelter was highly understaffed, so every week, a team of 10 volunteers cleaned the cat enclosures and groomed the cats. Many of these cats had infections, were blind, or were missing ears or limbs, and needed special care, which we also helped provide.
Homelessness is a problem that impacts many people in the Kansas City area and affects people of all ages. There are people in Kansas City living great lives, however, there are many living on the streets as well. Some people living on the streets consider their camps to be a community but these communities are being taken down. There are shelters around Kansas City for the homeless but not nearly enough. Homelessness affects nearly 1,733 people in Kansas City and people around Kansas City should help work on building more shelters around the city.
This reflection paper is focus on the evaluation of programs using “social science research methods” and results to “determine whether a public program is worthwhile” (Holzer and Schwester, 2011, p. 260). As my group presented last week, performance measurement and program evaluation are “complementary activities” (MacDavid and Hawthorn, 2006). For example, performance measurement provides empirical evidence in the progress of Hawaii Homelessness Programs, whereas program evaluation provide meaning to the result of that homelessness performance measurement. This may be an amazing way to stop homelessness, but what are the disadvantages of living in a homeless shelter? In the web article “Why Don’t Homeless People Use Shelter?” by Kylyssa Shay, published on January 27, 2017, in most homeless shelters they don’t have enough beds for more than 20 people! Females and males are not usually can’t be in the same shelter and if there are families the mothers would take the kids, but if there is a male boy at age 13 he is required to go to a male homeless shelter that he might not even be able to get into.
Data and Analysis My main focuses were on the types of people walking about (e.g. I observed homeless people walking with shopping carts), the amount of maintenance (trash piling where trash cans should be), and the surrounding structures. This allowed me to see a general demographic of people and the present economic class . From my observations, the streets are not well-cared for, having uneven pavement and depressions. Graffiti is also a prominent feature and is all over buildings, ATM machines, signposts, parking meters--almost any available flat surface.
Why is homelessness such a huge issue in the world? Many homeless people have mental illnesses and it is not easy for them to restart their lives and get a job. Many of them also have drug or alcohol problems, which makes it very difficult to get a long term job making enough income to support themselves. Homeless people need help getting off the streets but are unable to do it by themselves. Homelessness is a very huge problem that America has come to face.
Homelessness is more than just the absence of a permanent address. It is a condition in which a large, growing percentage of people in the United States and most likely the rest of the world find themselves. It means being cut off from relatives, social groups, and community organizations and losing a sense of belonging to society (Brown&Casey, 2014). Homelessness in America is a long-standing and pervasive social issue. Health care, in particular, poses a challenge as homeless individuals struggle to obtain even the most basic care.
