Reflective Essay For English Class

As I near the end of English 2030, I have been reflecting on the experiences and my learning this semester. The purpose of this class was to understand how to write for certain audiences, know how to use primary and secondary sources for a myriad of research-based essays, and to think critically. In this letter, I will show the skills I have obtained from the coursework and hopefully prove that I deserve credit for this class.
At the beginning of the semester, the first assignment was the Exploratory Narrative Research Blog. The research blog asked the students to come up with a topic, research all areas of the topic and to write our findings in a blog to a non-academic audience. The skills this essay challenged were the ability to find good, credible sources; be able to compile the information into a way that supports our topic; and to be able to strengthen our approach to researching a topic. These assignments were there to teach and to understand what makes an argument strong and how to use the research to support the argument. This also taught me how to write a thesis and how to use rhetoric situation to further my argument. I learned that writing for an academic audience is harder than writing for a non-academic audience. When writing for an academic audience, you have to avoid using first person pronouns, because the paper will start to sound like it is about the author rather than concrete evidence. I also learned that still keeping an interesting voice is also necessary to convey the ideas in the paper effectively. However, you should not become too casual in your or else it will not be taken seriously and thus lose credibility on the topic. Also when making an argument, I have learned to use the opposing opinion as a means to disprove their side and furthering my argument.
