AVID is a program not intended for everyone. This program exposes you to a variety of skills and mastery for adolescents desiring to attend college. Avid focuses around organization, teamwork, and for you to critically think. These skills are new to many and are provenly beneficial, however these skills do not favor those that have already had these skills and are show casing their full potential. Therefore, Avid is not for me since it interferes with my academic courses, mastery of avid skills and would not be beneficial for me because I have gained much of the skills and would rather interfer than assist.
One of the most appealing things about University of Oregon is the active inclusion and constant work towards creating a more expansive community. I hope to study Philosophy with a minor in ethnic studies or women and gender studies. These majors I feel will help me pursue my personal goal of a diverse education. As a woman from a conservative part of the east bay with a unique connection to the LGBTQ+ community, I feel that I have a lot to offer to the diverse discourse that The University of Oregon offers. Additionally being a person of privilege I see that I have a responsibility to take a set back and listen to those who have less fortunate geopolitical locations.
Freshman applicant prompt Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations. Personal Statement: Prompt 1 Throughout my life, I have changed vastly, from my personality to my locale. I was born in India, to a lower-middle class family that struggled with life in a third world country. Since my cousins lived with us, I felt comfortable, surrounded by familiar faces.
I feel that my unique experiences would greatly contribute to the diversity at Rosalind Franklin University. For example, volunteering with Gentiva Hospice and spending time with patients who had minimal days left to live, and meeting a young woman at Friedman Place who has faced a many hurdles in her life, but taught me the importance of always remaining optimistic. Most significantly, while in 2nd grade, I traveled to Russia with my parents to adopt my sister. We stayed in a small town for two months, allowing my parents and I to spend countless hours at the orphanage. I noticed that the happiest moment of these kids’ day was receiving a piece of fruit, and how their wrists were strapped to their beds at night.
I grew up north of WI in a secluded town; therefore college exposed me to the role diversity plays throughout communities. Realizing how sheltered my hometown
After reviewing tons of application, I have one thing clear they all ask, what is your race and, what is your gender. These forms of question help the interviewer or the one who reads the application know a little more of who is the person. In reality these questions are used in society to determine one’s, social location. The definition of Social location is basically your status in society and it is determined by race, gender, and class. While these are important to shape one’s social location they do not provide a full description of one’s life.
My eyes automatically drifted to the tall bright palm tree that moved along with the rhythm of the wind. It’s leafs danced as they presented their welcome. The sun shined down and hugged me with warmth, giving my skin a tingling, but satisfying sensation. I had come from Virginia to California, the famous, constantly spoken of state, that finally reached my sight. The state presented its beautiful attributes to capture my wonder and mesmerization.
Going through daily life you experience many different things, and most of them are the daily rigors of life that you do not think twice about. However, sometimes you have experiences that are not part of your average day, and those are the experience, I believe you learn the most from. One experience that has contributed the most to my development since I have been at West Point is the investigation into the lacrosse team last year. While I was not involved in the investigation, I experienced the effects and aftermath of the investigation. One way it affected my development is that it made me truly understand the impact leaders have on a group.
Often times people will mention what sets them apart. It is common for students of color to mention their race or ethnicity, but it is uncommon for European Americans to mention this. Jews mention their religion more often than a protestant, and girls will mention their gender
When I moved to the Philippines with my family at age six, I had no idea that I’d wind up locking myself in the room downstairs every day for weeks. I remember refusing to go to school where everyone would speak to me in a language I had no fluency in, and instead feebly hiding in the corner of the room in my new house with the door locked, waiting for my carpool to leave before I would come out. I was terrified and overwhelmed; the culture shock seemed insurmountable at the time and looking back now, it definitely was. Everything in the Philippines differed so much from what I was used to in California, and even from Japan where I lived for a year prior to moving. Never would I have thought that it would be there where I would find myself and become more intact with my culture than anywhere
There was a young boy at the Kapi’olani Medical Center for Women and Children; Wyndell, who made a notable impact on my continued interest in pursuing a career in the physical therapy field. I was a volunteer at Kapi’olani for 9 months and experienced shadowing patients who had a range of diagnosis including osteosarcoma, cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorders, but one case that sparked my passion was a child with encephalitis. Wyndell was only 13 years old and had been diagnosed with encephalitis, which is acute inflammation of the brain caused either by infection or the immune system attacking brain tissue. I met Wyndell when his spirit was down. He did not have the normal high energy level that you would expect from most teens at age 13.
When I transferred to Aurora University from Waubonsee Community College I hardly knew anyone and when I started the junior mentoring program it has helped me meet new people in some of the classes I’m taking reducing the stress of not knowing anyone and being able to choose members for a group and know that they think the same way I do. Last semester when we had to do the self-report survey assignment I realized what I needed to work on and how to achieve
I know for a fact that I have evolved as a learner these last few weeks. I not only know that because it has become easier for me to finish paragraphs and essays faster, but I have also learned the paragraph and essay templates by heart. As being a student that's part of the GT Program, I have had to finish two essays in a week, and I’ve had extra work along with my work in regular language arts and reading classes. Throughout the last few weeks I have learned how easy it is to organize an essay and a paragraph, I’ve learned the steps of writing a novel, and I have learned that being part of the GT Program is a privilege, not a right.
As I matriculate through Virginia Union University, I would, first, like to make an impact on my institution. Being one of the 17 African American men in this program has already given me a great footing in order to start my legacy. While I’m here I plan to grow and later take what I’ve learned back to Virginia Union. I’d promote the importance of being an African American man living in a country that was meant to constantly suppress our freedom and hide our worth.
I have always hated writing about myself, and I always dreaded assignments in school where I had to describe myself. I always wanted to avoid doing these assignments because I did not want to sound narcissistic, or self-absorbed. I dislike people like that now, because I used to be one of those people. It took many lessons learned before I humbled myself; I am still learning to humble myself today with recent experiences I have had. Although I hate to write about myself, I have always liked to reflect on myself.
