This third quarter of AP Language & Composition was quite similar but also different in ways compared to the previous semester. Having already experienced half a school year of the class, I was already aware of the expectations and the work requirements needed. One big difference in approach was how I brainstormed for ideas. Last semester, most of our writing was rather formulaic and didn’t rely much on creativity and chose the most convenient topic for the task. However, this semester’s focus on satirical writing was quite different in how we chose a subject and approached the satire. This time it was mostly left for us to decide, so I tried to find a topic that I found interesting. I’ve definitely read and witnessed people performing pieces on a satiric level, but never to the point where I created my own. But during this quarter, we spend a lot of time understanding this particular style of writing. Using this newly learned information, I was able to become a better writer and improve myself in certain areas. For example, in my first copy of my synthesis, I was docked points in the area of voice. But after coming in during JAG and having a one-on-one conversation, I was able to better understand what I did wrong and fix the issue. But this quarter didn’t just help improve my understanding of satire, but I was also able to participate in additional practice in skills such as identifying tone and moods through indicators in the novel Invisible Man. This novel has been fairly interesting, particularly in the area of the author’s voice and tone. During the rhetorical analysis timed write over a section of the book, I originally didn’t do so well.
