My appointment to General McLane’s LINK Crew is an amazing opportunity to gain leadership training and utilize it within my local community. LINK Crew is a faculty-appointed organization that utilizes forty driven juniors and seniors to help transfer students and incoming freshman become orientated to the high school culture and rules. A leader is able to gain an audience’s attention because of their personality, morality, and how they hold themself. It is important for a leader to be organized, compassionate, able to compromise but also be firm on what they believe, and be a person who people look up to and aspire to be. I was part of an organization called National Charity League and this organization helped grow women’s confidence, public speaking skills, time management, and organizational skills. Each month, each class holds meetings to plan and discuss projects that follow the class’s focuses. This past year Class of 2023 philanthropic focus is children, cultural focus is international food, and for leadership we are focusing on self care and reflecting on the NCL experience.
I want to be a New Leaders Council fellow because I am impressed by the career building opportunities that it provides to its fellows. I am at a point in my career where I must continue to build my network to further develop my career. I am interested in the opportunity to learn from others experiences and share in ways that can help to build others. I am impressed that the New Leaders Council represents is a collective of changemakers that are prepared to address the complexities in society. In review of the website, I am excited to see the curriculum designed to develop leaders in several areas including: communications, fundraising, and political management.
I believe that in becoming a Link Leader, I will become a memorable friend to incoming freshmen. My high school experiences allow me to provide valuable insight assist freshmen in their needs. Previously, I have guided fifth-graders, transitioning into middle school, in 7th-8th grade, and I feel even more capable of helping incoming freshmen. By finding opportunities to assist others, problem solving, and actively participating in other clubs and contributing new ideas, I demonstrate many leadership qualities around Campus. My strong work ethic is shown through maintaining top grades in rigorous, honors, and AP classes, alongside being involved in extracurricular activities.
Boy Scouts has taught me many skills and truths for life, but no skill has had as much impact as servant leadership---the ability to gain the trust of those around you by helping them. Being active and a leader in a group happens naturally now; after years of following, I find myself leading my friends. Whether it was because of being a Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) and Eagle Scout in my troop or, I have drawn in new friends who have grown to look to me as a leader. At the beginning of this school year I drew in many new friends who look to me as a leader. I am also a part of the leadership team for the Archdiocese Youth Advisory Council (AYAC). AYAC is a group of high school students from parishes around the archdiocese who volunteer to plan events for the youth of the entire archdiocese, as well as give eachother updates on what has been going on in each parish. In the summer of 2015, I attended the High School Leadership Institute (High-Li) of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. High-Li is an eight day intensive training to be a leader in today’s world. The myriad of duties include inspection, hiring, training, safety, and program implementation at three facilities: a Low and High Ropes Course, Rappel Tower, and a Leadership Reaction Course (LRC) as part of an outcomes based curricular and co-curricular leadership and character development program. I oversee 20-40 student “facilitators” who develop adventure based leadership programs that are fundamentally aligned with the institutional mission and integrated with the academic curriculum. The Leader in Me teaches students 21st century leadership and life skills and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader (FranklinCovey, 2009). The program has created 7 habits that promote a positive learning environment. The program is also aligned to several national and state academic standards. The program is designed to teach students about life skills such as responsibility, accountability, leadership and initiative. The learning environment is designed to be student-led.
Most importantly, since the contents of this course are largely different from what I have learned in my major courses. I regard this as a rare opportunity for me to take on some new challenges, and I would like to take a chance to develop my leadership skills. Before attending this course, “leadership” is a word quite far away from me, and I only have some basic understandings of it. And I found out that most of my thoughts I had about leadership are very different from what it really is.
