I was in a difficult place whenever I decided to sign up for this course. I was not for sure if I should take the course as a high school senior or wait until I went off to college. I decided to take it during my senior year because I knew that I would have the resources I needed and could trust, like my English teachers and libraries that I was familiar with. I had very high expectations for this class and I knew that this would help me become a better writer. I expected to learn how to better understand pieces of literature and hopefully I would be able to write essays better. I have learned many things in this course I have learned how to love Literature, how to write a Literary Analysis essay and how to write an Evaluation essay. …show more content…
My grades in my other classes began to rise due to taking this course. For example, in History, I receive a 100 on writing a thesis assignment. Prior attempts I would make terrible grades because I never could understand how to write a thesis or what the purpose was for the thesis. Personally, I have become a more stressed out individual than I used to be. In the beginning I was really laid back and not worried about the course because I knew that I would have the work done and turned in on time, but then the class became harder. I had to focus on other things like scholarships and Psychology causing me to become stressed out. My writing has improved drastically before I never knew how to use an outline and did not understand the purpose of one. I now know that an outline helps a writer guide their essay and transition from each topic. An outline also helps a writer to keep their essay neat and organized. I now use an outline whenever I'm about to begin a paper, so I can write it to the best of my abilities. I have also learned the correct MLA format which has helped me become a better writer because I now know how to do intext citations along with work cited
How English 095 Changed My Life Some college classes can be boring for students, but some students might get lucky and have a class that is life changing. During the spring 2016 semester at Wilmington University, I took a class that was life changing and it made me think about what I wanted to do with my future. I took English 095 as a requirement for my communications degree. As I sit back and reflect on my experience in English 095, I am grinning just thinking about how the class has made me think about my future careers.
Likewise, creating a cover letter taught me many useful strategies that I will definitely put to use when it comes time for me to submit an official cover letter to a company. One of the biggest things that I have learned from taking this course is that good content is more important than sophistication. Both are very important in essay writing, but it is more important to have clear content and material so that the audience can understand your position. Last year, I always seemed to lose points on essays for not having sophisticated enough prose, so I came into this class under the impression that the most important things in a
(Toor 3) Before taking this class I had no idea how to write an admissions/scholarship essay. I was able to learn what the admissions office was looking for and what to avoid when writing the essay. “Many online application systems screen applicants based on certain criteria or keywords; if you do not include these keywords in your materials, it is possible that a human being will never set eyes on your application. That is why it is important to read carefully and fully understand what an employer is looking for, so you can mirror that language in your application materials. (Schlauch 1) I had a total of three jobs before this class and never had to make a resume and cover letter even though I should have.
This course so far has helped me branch out in my writing and find new ideas. Some forms at first seemed unrelated and unusable, but it has started to boost my confidence and to write what is on my mind. Furthering one's education is a great goal to have in many different ways of life. Whether that be to obtain a new higher paying job, giving you more confidence to voice your thoughts and opinions to others, and in some cases help you to be a productive adult in this economy.
With my written essays, I simply revised the essays as I wrote. So, I assert that this course has helped me learn to manage my writing efforts a bit
After taking this course for just over three months now, I have realized that it has made a significant change in my life. When I am in my other courses such as sociology or history not only am I understanding different aspects of the classes better than before but I am also analyzing the information being presented from a outlook other than that of a settler. Additionally I am incorporating ideas from this class into my other classes more than I have before from any other course I have taken in my four years in university and I am forming my own thoughts on how I look at society now compared to before. I really value the qualities this course has given to me because I feel that it has improved me as a student, member of society, future educator
It allowed me to get out and actual talk to people that I didn’t know to gather research for the paper. The course was fun but also time-consuming when
In conclusion I’m very happy with the class because it help me understand how my classes are going to be when I move up classes. I take English again next semester. I’m probably going to be pooped out from all the essays we did from this semester’s English class, but at least I know how rough it’ll
Having the opportunity to write a variety of different essay styles has challenged me to improve my writing techniques even slightly. Having good credible sources was another technique I learned and improve. For most of my work, I used to go to Google, and just type whatever it is I was looking for, and usually I do not end up with that much great information. Now I start searching for information in databases because they are credible and more reliable.
Over the this past semester in freshman composition I have learned how to write a college level paper. Going into this class, I was a little unsure and scared that I wasn’t going to be able to do the things that were required for me to do. As the semester passed I could definitely see a change in my writing. I learned how to use the appropriate punctuation, how to write and refute an argumentation paper, which I believe is my strongest piece of writing and how to research and gather information to write a strong research paper. I knew coming into this class that I was going to struggle with my punctuations, word choice, and the overall flow of the paper.
My expectations coming into the course were high and remained high throughout the duration of the course. The essays I wrote in the class really challenged me to progress in my writing skills. The illustration essay really served as an example of what not to do when writing at a college level. My approach of the essay was really misunderstood and grammatically incorrect.
I fixed these mistakes by adding detail in some paragraphs and clarifying others. Additionally, I learned how to better cite my papers in MLA format. Class discussions were helpful because you clarified the topics that I couldn’t fully understand in the textbooks. For example, you defined and showed us the Stasis theory, you explained ethos, pathos, logos, and rhetorical situation, and you helped explain how to write better theses. Peer revisions were another aid for my writing. By receiving feedback from my peers, I learned what I needed to improve on and how to do so.
• I liked the instructional format and structure of this course because it helped me learn in a more productive way than in my other classes. I really liked how we were required to do four reflection papers on the chapters and integration essays because I learned a lot more having to write about the subject in-depth. In addition, the role plays gave me a sense of what the chapter was about in real life situations by us having to act it
Each week I read and studied each assignment meticulously, and for that, I saw my writing starting to improve. I saw my paragraphs starting to sharpen up; I started using words that I never thought possible, I was even putting punctuation in spots that I never thought possible. Taking this class has given me so much it not only has given me back my self-confidence, but it has taught me how to write a paper and how to format one with a title page and reference list. Finally, one of the biggest things that I think truly helped me in this class I believe was my teacher and how active she was in our classes discussion topics. Each week we would have to answer two discussion topics and respond to a classmate for each of them, and our teacher would always ask us questions.
The art of argument persuasion I’ve learned in this course is so beneficial for my marketing major. Other than that, it made me develop the essay writing skills necessary for success in my studies at the university level. This English course also taught me how powerful written words can be, and how the delivery of the tone is important for the reader. The tone of a narrative is different than the tone of a research, where the difference makes the paper. Also, the power in written words tells how much it is crucial to mankind.
