5 Victims of the Holocaust Kaj Munk - Born on January 13th, 1898, Kaj Munk was a Danish playwright and Lutheran pastor. Although he is well known for these roles, he is mostly remembered for being a victim of the holocaust. Munk was actually a fan and admirer of Hitler, before he went on his campaign to exterminate the jews. This changed his opinion on the powerful leader, which caused him to write plays about how terrible the Nazi’s were. He was arrested and murdered by the Gestapo, the secret police of the Nazi’s.
Meyer Hack was born and raised in Ciechanow, Poland. In 1942, he was deported, like many others, to Auschwitz with his family. Upon arrival, his mother and sisters were killed. He and his brother were chosen for slave labor. They were assigned to pull laundry carts.
He writes how the Nazi destroys the Jewish and about the horrors of being put into a concentration camp. Only he knows what that was like seeing people starve to death and getting weak by the moment to the point of dying, seeing people be treated less than animals by the savage guards and being burnt and put into the same grave. All these traumatic memories were part of his young life. He was stripped of his childhood, of all the precious memories he could have made. His experiences definitely marked him for life in all the ways: mentally, spiritually and bodily.
Statistically, only 54% of the world has heard about the Holocaust. Believe it or not, some people don't know it exists or they deny it happened. Regarding these statistics, the Holocaust is still a very emotional event in history to many. Ever since the Holocaust, people have had multiple different viewpoints on the topic, including writers. One author that shares my viewpoint on the Holocaust is an author by the name of David Oliver Relin.
1. The Sky Is Falling By Kit Pearson is a novel about a ten year old british girl named Norah Stoakes who is part of a group called the skywatchers with her friends who look out for german planes. Norah likes being in the “front lines” and she enjoys being in the group very much. One day everything is changed when her parents send her and her little brother Gavin to Canada for safety. In my opinion this is one of the climaxes of the story.
The Holocaust took place during the years 1933 to 1945. It was an attempt to remove all of the Jews, and other smaller groups such as homosexuals and Jehovah's Witnesses, which lived in the country of Germany. The events that took place during the holocaust were lead by a German man named Adolf Hitler. Schindler's List is a film about the Holocaust from a man named Oskar Schindler's perspective as a leader of a concentration camp. The film displays the five stages of the Holocaust.
In the beginning of Kluger’s “Death Camp” chapter, she immediately alludes to the idea of Jewish hope: “During the entire Hitler period I never heard a Jew voice the opinion of the Germans could be victorious…to hope was a duty” (89). This seems, of anything, to be a last, desperate attempt at holding onto the life European Jews once knew – one entirely estranged from the dehumanizing and prejudicial actions of the German Nazi regime. It also may begin to justify why may Jews did not leave Germany (as well as surrounding countries) as the former’s social, political and economic agency quickly faded, entering the death camps. More than 12,000 children under the age of 15 passed through the Terezin Concentration Camp, also known by its German name of Theresienstadt, between the years 1942 and 1944. Out of all the children, more than 90% lost their lives during the time of the Holocaust. Additionally, throughout this time, children would write poetry describing how they would like to be free and their faith in believing they would one day be free again and see the light of the sun. They would also write about the dreadful experiences they suffered through. To add on, the poet’s word choice helps to develop the narrator’s point of view.
Survivors of the Holocaust After the war against the Nazis, there were very few survivors left. For the survivors returning to life to when it was before the war was basically impossible. They tried returning home but that was dangerous also, after the war, anti-Jewish riots broke out in a lot of polish cites. Although the survivors were able to build new homes in their adopted countries. The Jewish communities had no longer existed in much part of Europe anymore.
The Aftermath of the Holocaust With many countries left in ruins after the Holocaust, people were distraught and in search of closure on what happened to their family members. It was after the remainder of the concentration camps had been liberated, that many questions began to arise as far as what should be done with the officers in charge of the horrible occurrences and where the surviving Jews could continue their lives. Jews had an arduous time finding a place to live, since their homes were confiscated when they were taken into hostility by the Germans. The book I chose for the nonfiction assignment was Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank. This book, written in 1942 through 1944 and published in 1947, is a collection of diary entries by a teen named Anne Frank during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. It describes normal teenage events like crushes, friendships, and having trouble with adults, but also describes a family and others forced into an attic to hide from the Germans and the affect the war had on especially Anne the people she was in hiding with. Anne’s entries are both an insight on the teenage mind and into the mind of those who were deeply affected by world war two. Expository Report “We must do something, we can’t let them kill us like that, like cattle in the slaughterhouse, we must revolt”. These are the words from many men surrounding Elie Wiesel as he entered Auschwitz, calling out for rebellious toward the Germans harsh conditions. Of course they had no idea what they were getting themselves into, many thought that there was nothing wrong until boarding the cattle train that would send them off to their final resting place. Life during the holocaust was torturous to say the least, so much so that some 6,000,000 lives were taken during this time in Jewish descent alone. People of the Jewish descent did not have it easy; they either were forced out of their homes into concentration camps, or they would hide out only to be found and killed of they remained in their settlements.
