The Renaissance was a ‘rebirth’ and renewal of many of the classical ancient Greek and Roman beliefs. The Renaissance began in the city-states of Italy, the center of trade in Europe. “Many wealthy merchants and bankers became patrons of the newly developing styles and ideals of Renaissance art.” Ideas such as Humanism, Individualism, Secularism, and Realism were expressed through the Italian art and the artist’s interests and influences of the period. During the Renaissance art placed more emphasis on the individual and ideal of the individual. Artisans, and sculptors like Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Donatello were the most famous for their astonishing masterpieces that express the ideas of secularism and Humanism. The dominant intellectual movement of the Renaissance was “humanism, a philosophy based on the idea that people are rational beings.” Michelangelo , Italian painter, sculptor, architect, and poet “was a humanist and was brave enough to follow ancient Greek and Roman beliefs of showing the human body in its purest, most natural form—nude.” One …show more content…

Raphael's “School of Athens”, “represents all the greatest mathematicians, philosophers and scientists from classical antiquity gathered together sharing their ideas and learning from each other.” Humanism portrayed harmony, balance, and order. Raphael portrayed those ideas in his artwork. Raphael painted philosophers and Artisans with religious figures at the time. Raphael uses the techniques of perspective to create a closeness and farness of objects in the painting.
