Cinco de Mayo History of the Celebration Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of the Mexican Victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The celebration occurs in the state of Puebla, Mexico where the Mexican victory happened. The first celebration took place in the mid-20th century among Mexican immigrants. He and his father oversaw the food preparation, and back of the house operations, while his sister took care of the front of the house operations. The 16th century Spanish explorer, Hernando De Soto arrived in the west indies as a young man and made money in slave trade. Seeking glory and riches, he left on a major expedition in 1538 to conquer Florida for Spain. He and his men traveled throughout the southeastern united states in search of money. In 1541, De Soto became the first Europeans to cross the Mississippi river. De Soto died early the following year.

Cesar Chavez History Day Project One Mexican American farm worker dedicated his days to better the lives of his people, his name was Cesar Chavez. Horrendous treatment of farmworkers caused Chavez to take a stand for what he believed in, for no one should be treated poorly because of race or social class. During Chavez’s life, he organized peaceful protests, boycotts, as well as participated in a historic 36 day "Fast for life". Chavez not only changed the working rights for farm workers but subsequently gave dignity to the working class of America. The legend of the Virgen de Guadalupe has become a common symbol of hope to many incoming immigrants of Latin American countries. Due to U.S. governmental and economic interventions in Latin American countries, it has caused many people to migrate as refuges and flee unstable environments. These mass migrations have been followed by torturous trails and stories that many times end in death or abuse, however, other times it has allowed refugees to move away and live stable lives in the U.S. However, once in the U.S., these immigrants are faced with discriminatory policy based on false accusations that makes their lives unsafe and unprotected. Therefore, Latinx religious faith becomes a strong component of community for these groups.

In 1895, a rebellion broke out in Cuba, as Cuban patriots wanted independences from Spain. Through the yellow journalism, reports of Spain’s cruel military tactics lead to a public uproar in the U.S. However, most of these stories were exaggerated as a form to promote war. After an American battleship, the USS Maine, was destroyed, America was “forced” to start war and stop Spanish occupation.

Don Quixote is the most unusual of all the epics that we have read thus far. The hero of the epic is Don Quixote but he is a man who is imitating the deeds of famous and heroic knights. While the other epics previously studied have heroes who are strong, physically fit men of noble birth, Don is a delusional 50 year old, low born noble from La Mancha, Spain. He read obsessively about chivalry and it is through his pursuit of reviving it that he attempts to protect damsels, widows and orphans. Unlike the other heros we have studied, Quixote becomes known throughout the land for his misadventures rather than his heroic deeds.
