Chapter 16 of Readings for Sociology, titled "Deviance and Liminality" by Beth Montemurro describes liminality as "being 'neither here nor there'" in reference to the in between phase of transitioning from one status to the next. An example of liminality is seen at the stage at the end of senior year of high school, but before graduation. Many students participate in senior pranks in the final weeks, or days, of their high school careers. Students often adopt the mindset of thinking that their actions will not matter in a couple months because they will soon be graduated. For example episode 11 when a guy named Jason Robert physically attacks a girl named Megan in front of an audience , he behavior is considered deviance because he harms another person. Attacking another person and stalking is prime example that he is different from most people. Another example is episode season 15 episode 10 when detective Benson attacked and kidnapped by a murder. This broke into her apartment and held her captive for four days where he would tie her up and make her watch as he did unspeakable things to another. His behavior would be considered as deviance because what he does is unsocial and it violates what is considered normal in today’s society.
Deviance can be defined as behavior that violates social expectations and norms. Deviance can be something small like dressing like a hippy or in gothic clothing, or something big like robbing a bank. Each society has laws and rules to keep one from committing deviant acts. Colin Kaepernick is going against NFL policies, going against his duty as an American citizen, and finally, he is disrespecting the men and women who fought and died for this country. I believe Colin Kaepernick is being deviant when kneeling to the flag.
After reading these articles I garnered a greater insight on what deviance is and how it is formed. According to the Outsiders reading, deviance is essentially a label that is put on a person of whom commits an act or exhibits behaviors that stray from what is normal or expected. These people are therefore also labeled as “outsiders”. Outsiders in that they are seen as those who are to be placed outside of a certain group do to their deviant behaviors. There exist many views of deviance.
Deviance is categorized as a violation of cultural norms. In order for one to express deviance, they must act out against societal norms which are known as expectations and rules that "lead the way" for how an individual should act. Therefore, its much easier to depict from there that mostly one's society is what ultimately differentiates what the rules and expectations are as well as what it needed to break those rules that they have somewhat instilled and ingrained into our daily lives. To add, due to society and different eras of socialization deviant behavior evolves over time.
Bodybuilding began in the 1890s, from Mr. Eugene Sandow, whom the Mr. Olympic statue is modeled on. (historyofbodybuilding.org) Bodybuilders participate a sport that requires strength, commitment, discipline, passion, courage, and sacrifice. They often times have to sacrifice the “pleasures” other people get to enjoy in an effort to reach their goals. They appear in lineups, perform individual posing routines, in front of a panel of judges who rank them on criteria including muscularity, symmetry, and conditioning. Bodybuilders prepare for these competitions through dehydration, tanning, and fat loss which all work together to make their muscle definition look more distinct.
As the Roman poet Horace once said, "adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant." In other words, he believed that challenges are beneficial because they bring out talents that would have stayed hidden otherwise. He thought that adversity would force a person to use their unknown talents out of desperation. Some argue that his theory is irrelevant and that a person 's skills will develop just as well without adversity if they have the capacity, but I believe that hardships will evoke and improve on their dormant talents.
Thirteen Reasons Why is a show based off the overall idea and issue that is bullying. In the show, a character, Hannah Baker decides to commit suicide due to the poor treatment she received from her peers. Following her death, it came to light that Hannah documented the thirteen reasons she killed herself. Each tape recording, corresponded with a person who she believed was at fault. Each individual person on the tapes was to listen to them all then pass them on to the next person, doing this all in numerical order.
Solitary Madness History has shown many ways that criminals were punished for committing a crime. Some crimes in the past were punished with torturous techniques that were deemed suitable at certain points in human history. However, as time passed, many of those punishment techniques were viewed, by many, as cruel and demeaning, which sparked change in the way crime was punished. Legislation was created to protect the inmate from being punished too severely.
As once said by the Roman poet Horace, “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” I agree with this because in many of the books and movies I have watched or read they have this general idea flowing through it all. This is saying that when people face a challenge and they are put in a corner, the push through and find a way. However, when they are just living normal life they tend not to have the same skills. It's kind of like when someone has adrenaline pumping through them they can achieve things much better than normal.
Imagine someone tells you they suffer from depression, ADHD, or another medicalized condition. How would this change your perception of this person? If one of my friends came to me and said Paul, I something important to tell you and reveled that they had let’s say HIV. I would not consider them to be deviant, but I would have feelings of sorrow and empathy for that person because having HIV can be an arduous battle that can eventual lead to death. The definition of deviant describes an action or behavior that violated social norms.
According to Hunt and Colandar (2011), a word deviant refers to when an individual’s actions contradict with society’s norms. For instance, majority peoples followed norms because society expect individual to behave in morally tolerate with each other. Those failing to conform the norms noted as deviant. In a social context, the task of the society is to blind the action of the social community together. Once failing to act them to the society’s reaction that seem as deviant.
They both define deviance as “a behavior, trait, belief, or other characteristic that violates a norm and causes a negative reaction” (153). An example of deviant behavior that was portrayed in the film was Danny writing his book report on Mein Kampf written by Adolf Hitler. This is considered deviant behavior since the average person would not be so invested in the life and ideology of Hitler. This is the reason as to why Dr. Sweeney told him to rewritten his essay. Another deviant behavior exhibited by Danny was his appearance.
Deviance is any behavior that violates social norms and is usually of sufficient severity to warrant disapproval from the majority of society. Deviance can be criminal or noncriminal. Media helps us frame the way we think, act, and choose. Children have growing brains
Functionalists, conflict theorist, and interactionist all have different views and focus on different parts of society and its people. What is deviance?
