Engineering Drawings Military vehicles and weapons, flying objects, like planes and drones, robots, the study and understanding of kinesiology, and our knowledge of how water flows. This may seem like a random list of things that have no significance to each other at all, but they all in fact have something in common. What they have in common is Leonardo Da Vinci. Leonardo has impacted the world of engineering in so many different ways, it is almost impossible to count them all. He is considered to be the father of many different designs and models and some of his original works are still being referenced to today. This essay will discuss Leonardo and how his inventions were not only masterpieces in his time, but also how they provided a …show more content…

Leonardo was fascinated with flight and spent much of his life designing machines and objects that have to do with flight. He observed birds and drew them and their wings (DaVinci Tech). He studied how bird’s wings flapped and created lift so that birds could fly and hover. All these observations were inputted into many flying machine designs and even still it was hard for him to invent a design that was able to work. Since air is not visible, he experimented with water and researched how water flows around objects and he also examined aerodynamics. He came up with an idea much like today’s helicopter, the aerial screw (DaVinci Tech). The fifteen foot diameter screw spun, creating lift under it, thus being able to rise. Modern helicopters use propellers that create drafts that lift the helicopter, much like Leonardo’s aerial screw, but to keep balance, a rotor with smaller propeller blades spin on the tail of the helicopter. His wings were designed to look and act much like a bat’s would and the pilot would be sitting in a cabin that would be like the body of the bat. This design was names the ornithopter. He even designed early landing gear and other objects that would help the pilot (DaVinci Tech). Eventually, after many designs, he realised that his ornithopter was impossible and would not work, so he stopped his work. However, …show more content…

He worked on the project for over a decade designed moulds to ensure an equal amount of bronze would cover the horse. He never got to see the product finished but, Charles Dent took on the challenge of recreating it and it was sent to Milan as a gift to Italy from the United States (DaVinci Tech). Another great design of Da Vinci is his robot. Leonardo designed many robots that could be programmed to manoeuvre themselves. In one of his designs, a cart was able to be programmed and steered by springs that behaved like a pendulum in a clock (DaVinci Tech). Another famous design was his robot knight that was able to sit, stand and move its arms and mask by itself. All these parts were moved by pulleys that were programmed specifically for each part of the robot (DaVinci Tech). He also designed a power saw that was able to spin a blade to cut wood instead of using a manual saw. All these designs changed the technological timeline and even today, we have very little knowledge of how he was able to design these objects so long
