The 1960’s Civil Rights Movement “Privilege is when you contribute to the oppression of others and then claim that you are the one being discriminated.” By Dashanne Stokes. That’s what the Civil Rights Movement was about. The Civil Rights Movement was an event that started in 1955 and ended 1968, this event was about, a movement to secure African-Americans equal access to and opportunities for privileges and rights of the U.S citizenship. The Civil Rights Movement started in 1955, with Rosa Parks not sitting at the back of the bus, this was a start to the many protests during the Civil Rights Movement. Sat down at a whites only lunch counter, they ordered coffee. Despite being denied, they sat silently and politely at the lunch counter until closing time. That was one of the early first 1960’s protest that had a huge outcome for this event. This protest started to get people to join on in for the Civil Rights Movement protest. Every protest, or any type of a group of people that want to get something, has to have a leader. One important leader/figure during the Civil Rights Movement, was Martin Luther King Jr. Martin was a well known Civil Rights leader and activist who had a great deal of influence on American society 1950’s and 1960’s. His strong belief in nonviolent protest helped set the tone of the movement. Martin would traversed the country to find his quest for freedom. He started to become a leader during the bus boycott with Rosa Parks
