When classic novels are listed, some of the following titles come to mind, To Kill a Mockingbird, Little Women, or Lord of the Flies. These stories are timeless classics and have added to the world’s literature library through unique themes and character experiences in the storylines. F. Scott Fitzgerald has immortalized his name through writing The Great Gatsby and the story is able to hold it’s own in an ever changing world. The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, has earned its title of classic through exposing different lifestyles, use of literary devices, and teaching valuable lessons.

One of these symbols is the green light that is flashing on the end of Tom and Daisy Buchanan’s pier. For Gatsby, this light represents his hope and lifelong dream of attaining Daisy. This symbol is constantly referenced throughout the story. At the end of the first chapter a man (Gatsby) is seen on a beach reaching for the green light that is across the sound. Nick thinks it strange behavior and mentions how he feels like it is a very serious ritual for the man. Gatsby’s actions throughout the story are synonymous with this meaning as he pursues Daisy. When Nick is persuaded to finally invite Daisy over for tea Nick believes Gatsby realizes that, “The colossal significance of that light had vanished forever compared to the great distance that had separated him from Daisy it had seemed very near to her, almost touching her (98).” Gatsby realizes that yearning for Daisy is more enjoyable for him than actually having her there. He then loses her, which is devastating for him in every way.
