Have you ever noticed the continuous recurring theme in your favourite movies and books? That is called the hero’s journey. Bilbo Baggins, a supposedly unadventurous hobbit is requested to go on a difficult journey with a group of dwarves by none other than Gandalf, the well-known wizard himself. Ishmael Beah, a young, happy boy goes out with his friends without saying goodbye, not knowing it may be his last time to see them. While with his friends, his town gets attacked by the rebels and his whole world turns upside down.
You don’t need to have super strength, powers like flying, or laser eyes to be a hero. To be a hero you need self-sacrifice, confidence, knowledge, and bravery. Bilbo Baggins was an ordinary hobbit, with no special powers. Bilbo was content in his hobbit hole, till Gandalf came to Bilbo’s hobbit hole to convince him to go on a quest with him and the dwarves. “Let’s have no more argument.
Bilbo Baggins the Burglar Thesis: In the book The Hobbit, the character Bilbo Baggins is a middle class hobbit who must challenged his introverted nature to help the dwarves reclaim their land. Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit, who lives in his hobbit hole. Hobbits are generally short and fat introverted people who don’t leave their house much. Bilbo Baggins was living like that, until one day, thirteen dwarves and his old wizard friend(Gandalf) enter his house and start eating and talking like it was their house.
“Don’t be afraid to change. You may lose something good but you may gain something better.” In the Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien presents an unlikely hero, a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. Another important character in the novel is Gandalf, a wizard and an old family friend, forces Bilbo to come out of his comfort zone onto a journey to recover the dwarves name and gold from the evil dragon, Smaug. Bilbo fulfills the archetypal hero’s journey by starting of an in ordinary world ,facing Ordeal, Death, and Rebirth, and The Road Back while illustrating the theme of innovation.
Tolkien’s novel, The Hobbit, should not be banned in high schools because it displays the creativity that an author should be allowed to have when writing fictional works. The themes of friendship and striving against adversity were lost among those looking for witchcraft and "satanic themes," and this has caused Tolkien’s novel to decrease in both familiarity and popularity. On the contrary to this “satanic” belief, Gandalf, a great wizard, can symbolize God – both utilize the weak and give them the opportunity to grow and develop in what one is meant to become. Gandalf’s disappearances can best be related to the saying the teacher is always the quietest during the test; therefore, without solely relying on Gandalf/God, the individual has to stand up and develop on his or her own. The protestors against this book are seeing only in black and white not the in-depth layers that literature has to offer to the reader.
Michael Shermer, a science writer and historian of science said, “Humans are pattern-seeking story-telling animals, and we are quite adept at telling stories about patterns, whether they exist or not.” In J.R.R. Tolkien's novel The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, the main protagonist, joins a group of dwarves to recover their lost, forgotten gold from Smaug the dragon. Joseph Campbell’s A Hero with a Thousand Faces, he states that many legendary heros follow a pattern in their adventures. Matthew Winkler has his own ideas of the heroic quest pattern, stating the hero's follow a pattern of eleven stages. Both The Hobbit and the heroic journey have similar elements with departure, initiation and then return.
Kevin Conroy once said, “Everyone is handed adversity in life. No one’s journey is easy. It’s how they handle it that makes people unique.” He’s saying that if everyone was to be given the same obstacle, everyone would do it in their own distinctive way, which makes them all unique. In The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien, two different kinds of creatures, dwarves and a hobbit named Bilbo, were given the same journey to go on, but they handled it in diverse ways.
Both elves and dwarves play a big part in The Hobbit. You may not think so, but they actually have a history. They are both part of multiple books, plays, and movies. Most people think that elves and dwarves are really short. If you think that, your wrong.
Tolkien’s highly intricate imagery of malignance makes apparent the uncertainty encircling the company and sets the frightful mood over which Bilbo’s courage must prevail. His ominous description of Mirkwood Forest explains the hesitation in the company to pass onto the realm where “The entrance to the path was like a sort of arch leading into a gloomy tunnel”(153). The imagery evoked by “Trees … too old and strangled with ivy… to bear more than a few blackened leaves” (153) places the reader in the foreboding atmosphere in which the company is presently ensnarled, and effectively forewarns of sorcery, monsters and misery at play. Days into the forest, constant hunger gnaws at the company, leading them to disperse round and round in an entranced dream-like state. Then, somewhere in the pitch-dark night, Bilbo strikes dead a most nefarious enemy.
Tolkien’s message is just even the smallest deeds and people can do great things. This applies to people in general because even if you are small compared to someone else you may have the bigger heart, and you can change the chorus of the future. The message applies to me because I may be out numbered but if I stay with my heart nothing can mentally get in my way. I liked the book because I could connect with some of the dwarves, like Fili because he is the youngest and he has an over brother, Kili, and i have an over protective sister. I also liked it because I was crying when Thorin died because I am a very sensitive person and Thorin was one of my favorites.
The Holocaust Concentration Camps: Auschwitz The Holocaust was a horrid experience. The Holocaust came about because Adolf Hitler was upset over the loss of World War I. Hitler blamed the Jews for Germany’s loss in World War I, and he wanted to take over Germany, with that came him thinking he had to get rid of all the Jewish people. So after the loss of World War I, he tried and succeeded with the extermination of most of the Jews.
So, during his free time, always at the same desk, he developed a story about a funny creature named Bilbo who was befriended by dwarfs and faced various adventures with them in a quest to steal a dragon 's gold. When he finished writing the story, he let some of his students read it. Little did he know that one of his pupils was an employee for Stanley Unwin of the publishing firm Allen and Unwin. She introduced the book to Mr. Unwin and in 1937 Allen and Unwin published The Hobbit. Professor Tolkien was suddenly an author.
