The play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare is about two star crossed lovers who would do anything to be together. Throughout the story woe seems to follow Romeo and Juliet, and in the end they both take their own life. All of this misfortune may not have happened if Benvolio, one of Romeo’s close confidants had never urged Romeo to get over Rosaline, this is so because Romeo may have never met Juliet if Benvolio hadn’t been so adamant about his friend getting a new girl. Even though, Benvolio was just trying to be a good friend, he is most responsible for the misfortune of Romeo and Juliet. If Romeo and Juliet had never met, the story could have never happened, and they may have lived to see another day. At the start of the play Romeo was in love with a girl, who once again he couldn’t be with, Rosaline. Benvolio, being the good friend he was, urged Romeo to get over his feelings for Rosaline because, they didn’t have a future together. “Benvolio. By giving liberty unto thine eyes//Examine other beauties.”(Shakespeare 383). No one can predict the future, that we know of, but you can think out possible outcomes of your actions. If Benvolio had done this the characters may be in a different place at the end of the play. When Benvolio put the scheme of crashing the Capulet party on the table, he didn’t think about any of the things that could go wrong. He may have just been trying to be a good friend, but in reality he was really assembling a tragedy. “For never was a story of more woe//Than this of Juliet and her Romeo.”(Shakespeare 478). This story should teach us always to think things through, and not to do many things without impulse
