, battles, and the results of the Civil War. The Civil War started because of many things such as slavery and Secession. Slavery was an issue the North and South started to argue about. The South was also afraid that the North would grant freedom to the slaves so the South couldn't have slaves anymore. Slaves made up one third of the population in the South. Secession was a problem also because the South started to secede from the U.S. Secession is the action of withdrawing from a membership or a federation. An example of this is the Missouri Compromise which said that there could be no slave states North of the new boundary line of the North and South. "Mrs. Wise." Another example is the Compromise of 1850 which said California is a free state, and slave trading ended in District of Columbia (Washington D.C). Which determines whether a state wants to become a slave or a free state. In 1854, the Kansas Nebraska Act was passed which stated that any state wanting to come into the U.S. can decide if they are a free or slave state. Meade and the Confederate leader was Robert E. Lee. Union had 3,155 people killed, 14,529 people wounded, and 5,365 missing.
