Why does is always seem that people commit acts of good, only after tragedy has struck? It seems like in almost all cases where good deeds are done, it is following a evil or tragic event. Like for example, when a hurricane hits, afterwards, many people of the community or around the community will join together to help the victims the hurricane. In Anthony Doerr’s novel, All The Light We Cannot See, he presents this theme of good versus evil, showing how evil drives the good deeds of others. Through Werner, Madame Manec, and Etienne; Doerr connects how when evil begins to take hold over our lives, people will begin to do acts of good to fight back.

The Germans forced the people of Saint Malo to follow their rules, only allowing them buy a certain amount of food or clothes. After living like this for a little while, the women of Saint Malo take it as their responsible to try to fight against their destructive reign. “We’re the ones who make their world run… What are you saying? That we do something”(Doerr 249). The destructive acts of the Germans drives the women to fight back, to do their little part in the war. However, not everyone participates. Etienne told the women he wanted nothing to do with their little rebellion. However, when Madame Manec dies, Etienne changes his mind, picking up where she left off. It was only after this tragic event struck his family did he finally decide to do good. Etienne even went above and beyond, reading off news for others to hear, like for example, “...Monsieur Droguet wants his daughter in Saint-Coulomb to know that he is recovering well”(Doerr 346).
