So far in AP Language and Composition, we have learned how to critically analyze texts using rhetorical and literary analysis. I feel comfortable with literary analysis because of how frequently and often I have been doing it in the past couple of years. Regarding rhetorical analysis we have learned diverse types of appeals used in rhetoric, appealing to a reader’s emotions using pathos, an ethical appeal using ethos, or appealing to a reader’s logic using logos. The last paper I wrote I felt confident about what I was writing on my paper and the things I wrote for the writing assignment. I was really interested because it was a book report on a book that caught my attention. The book is called Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut, it was about his World War II experiences and how he was a prisoner of war in Germany. I did find this assignment to be a little challenging because we had to write about each chapter, however, we had to write each chapter in our own words and explain what each chapter was about. Writing instructors and many other professionals who study language use the phrase “rhetorical situation.” This term refers to any set of circumstances that involves at least one person using some sort of communication to modify the perspective of at least one other person. I’ve learned key points needed to construct a successful argument in order to persuade an audience, whether that be on paper for a professor or in a job interview in the future. So far, I’ve written many prompts and slack posts. One of my shortcomings is speaking in my own voice in the paper and not fully delving into the proper lexicon. These past few months have been interesting. I procrastinated (more than I should have), written a few papers, but I have also learned a lot about writing. Walking into this I had some writing experience but not nearly as much as I should of had. I knew how to summarize, cite, and work in groups but this class gave me the opportunity to fine tune those skills and learn new skills. College should not be taken lightly and The first new skill I learned was how to write a college level paper.
