The Power of Words “My grandmother always used to say if you've got a dollar, there's plenty to share”. Famous singer Rihanna ends her speech at Havard with this inspiring quote. She presented this moving speech after being awarded Humanitarian of the Year in 2017. In her speech, she uses many rhetorical devices and techniques to sway the audience and inspire them. Rihanna’s main source of persuasion and inspiration comes mostly from the use of pathos. She provides real-world examples to provoke emotion from the audience. Her speech was very motivational and she ended it by leaving everyone wondering what they can do to help other people as well as organizations. Many people had many positive things to say about the speech, including how inspirational it was. The rhetorical device that was used the most in this speech was the use of parallelism. She uses logos when she talks about how you can give twenty-five cents to save a child’s life. Rihanna then goes on to say that she always wondered how many twenty-five cents she could save up to save every kid in Africa. This shows the audience how easy it can be to make a change or help someone. You do not have to be rich to help someone, it can take as little as twenty-five cents. Afterward, Rihanna talks about her career and how she was able to achieve a lot at a very young age. Since she is a world-renowned singer and is willing to give this much time and hard work to make a change, it can inspire people who are fans of hers to do something as well.
