From the feedback I have received over the years I have identified my practice issue to be increased responsibility and patient load as a new RN. In order to address this practice issue, I need to improve my prioritization and time management skills. This will allow me to better handle the increase responsibility and patient load and will allow me to provide safe, competent and quality care to all my patients. My practice issue that I have identified relates to the CNO entry to practice competencies that were mentioned earlier. The competency that relates to my practice …show more content…

The learning need that I identified from this practice issue, are strategies to increase my time-management and prioritization skills. Overall my learning goal is in the first year of practice, I will use time management and prioritization strategies to help with the increased responsibilities and patient load of an RN to help provide safe, quality patient care. I formulated this goal by using the SMART criteria, which are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timed. Lastly, this goal is timed as I have provided a time frame for when these skills will be applied, which is during my current placement and in my first practice …show more content…

Through my research I was able to find three strategies that can be used in the practice setting. The first strategy that I found was creating goals on a daily basis. It is good to refer back to them to see how well activities were planned and to what extent they were achieved. These goals can be adjusted as the day may change due to new or different events. If one does not have goals, then it makes it harder to assess whether or not plans were achieved (Arnold & Pulich, 2004). In the maternity setting, these goals can help organize my care plan for each patient. For example, the todays goal for Mrs. Waxmin can be that I will provide teaching and assistance with breast feeding. While tomorrows the goal will be to allow her to try to independently breastfeed. These goals can be different for each patient but they are patient
