Roll of thunder essay “Truly great friends are hard to find, difficult to leave, and impossible to forget”-G. Randolf. This quote is demonstrating close friendships and the importance of keeping them alive.. Through her novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, author Mildred D. Taylor shows that Family and friends are the ones who will make sacrifices for you no matter what Uncle Hammer selling his car Stacy protecting TJ, Papa sets a quarter of his cotton on fire to try and save T.J. One of the first moments I see the Logan family sacrifice their life or land to save others that are struggling. For example, Uncle Hammer sold his car so Papa could pay The bank because they wanted the loan in full.

Taylor, Stacey, a young boy of color, faces an internal conflict regarding whether Jeremy or T.J. would be the best choice of a friend for him. Throughout the narrative, Stacey presents that he understands that both Jeremy and himself would be safer if they stayed away from each other and that a friendship with T.J. would be completely accepted in that era. The article, “Characteristics of a True Hero,” written by Samuel Rodenhizer, describes heroism as doing something, “for the benefit of someone other than themselves.” Johnny shows selflessness from minor things to as important as saving human lives. Johnny puts his friendship with Dally in jeopardy when he stepped in when Dally was annoying Cherry and Marcia at the drive-in. Later in the story, Johnny, Ponyboy, and Dally are at Dairy Queen and Johnny, knowing that Ponyboy won’t have serious consequences from the death of Bob, says that he is willing to turn himself in. Scott LaBarge’s essay “Heroes: Why Heroes are Important” is well written because he effectively uses pathos, logos, and karios when explaining heroes to his audience. When something goes wrong or we feel like we cannot continue, we could all use someone to step in and change our situation. Everyone needs a hero. Every past and modern culture over the course of history, has its hero’s. A hero is a person or figure that others look up to and use as forms of protection. Many cherish the hero’s, they make up who we are today. The Anglo-Saxon hero, Beowulf, and the postmodern hero/hero’s, the soldiers, both show the traits of bravery, selflessness, and loyalty. To have the trait of bravery you have to have lots of confidence in yourself and have courage.

Looking back on the myths a hero did not have it easy. They faced a lot of tough challenges and had to sacrifice many things to gain their status. Also look at one Hero that is highly idolized and used to day, the American solider. Little kids dream of being them and do pretend battles while lacking to see the true meaning behind them. That heroic meaning is them risking their lives, that they walk away from their families knowing they might not come back.
In The Road, the father is a hero because he is very smart and courageous, he overcomes his fear of giving up where others would, and he puts himself through excruciating pain in order to keep the child and himself alive.
