Many people can be “good”, but only a few of them are heroes. In the novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, by Mildred D. Taylor, one character in particular demonstrates heroic qualities. Papa’s numerous selfless acts shows why he was the hero in the story. He was willing to sacrifice himself to save a boy he did not really like, he risked his life going to the bank, and he did whatever he could to keep his family safe and help someone survive. His willingness to sacrifice his life for someone demonstrates why he is a hero. Papa, in full awareness, went to stop a hanging for a boy he did not like because he believed that it was wrong. He knows what could happen, but he still is prepared to help T.J, a kid who causes trouble too much,
