At the very beginning of chapter 14, the violence towards people of color was made a prominent issue for the text as it went into the Memphis attacks as celebrating freed slaves were brutally attacked and even killed by ex-Confederates. Its these extreme acts of violence agents people of color depicted in Gordon Under Medical Inspection, and what happened in Memphis that lead to the Republicans of the time to push so greatly for protections to be put in place for the now freed slaves. Unfortunately, as Republicans, as well as the now freed slaves fought to get people of color more protections and rights to prevent further incidents like the Memphis attacks, the people of the south also fought to keep some manner of control over black people so that they could continue to treat them as they wished, even if they weren't their slaves. As these two sides fought progress of reconstruction was stagnated for both sides, causing everyone to suffer because of it, but mostly the now freed slaves who had to try and make a living for themselves in places that didn't want them to be there to begin with. In the end people of color in the south would continue to face violence against them just as it was depicted in Gordon Under Medical Inspection, even after the civil war had ended, with people forgetting that the message of the drawing was that even people of color can be scared by the cruel actions of other people who wish to control
This killing just reiterated the fact that there was a clear difference in the two groups. It showed that they were in fact not going to be treated equally, and that they had no intentions of changing that anytime soon. This murder just paved the way for the whites to treat the African Americans however they wanted to, which would lead to several more racially motivated crimes to occur. In the Little Rock Girl a lot of people beat black people during integration, and when a picture was released it changed the minds of some people. When the picture of Elizabeth Eckford sitting on the bench while getting racial slurs thrown at her, The next day it was on the news. It says “News coverage motivated people to get involved”(Tougas 45). This quote is illuminating that people knew how bad Elizabeth was suffering and they tried to motivate her to continue going to central.
As Ming Young, a fan of Macy’s reiterates, “Who should read this book? Every Southerner, descendant of the South… and transplants to the South. The daily venom and institutionalized insults that African-Americans suffered — and they did suffer — cannot be guessed. It must be told, and it must be read.” In other words, those who are unaware of history, especially as it pertains to Southern History should definitely read this book.
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry Final Test One of the main themes in this novel was represented using the land. The Logans were fortunate to own their own land during these more racist and oppressed times so it was important to the family. The land could have been used to represent hope or the freedom the Logans had in the novel.
This action showed that white people did not like black people. The kids had limits for educational opportunities. They had limited educational opportunities because white people thought they were not that important so black people have fewer school supplies but the white people have a lot of opportunities. In the book roll of thunder Little man opened the book and saw a something that was racist and he threw the book on the floor.
Everyone has courage inside of them they just have to show it. Roll of thunder hear my cry introduces Cassie,a young girl who is willing to go above and beyond to fight the injustice of segregation, and to face her broadest fears. Cassie Logan has many courageous moments in this book but the three most challenging moments are standing up to Lillian Jean, Standing up for little man, and standing up for herself at the barnett store. Through Cassie´s actions she has proved she loves her family, loves the land, and knows that segregation is NOT RIGHT. She knows that equal rights is not an option in that day and age, but she will still try to make a difference in the world.
African-Americans were treated with respect, but they had to always sit in places far away from white families. They had no control over bus and car seats(Doc 7). Black people were always seated far away from white families because the people arranging them on the buses didn't want the African Americans to begin to think that they weren't more important than the whites. The suburban areas similar to Levittown didn't allow people of color to live in those places in the late 1950s(Doc 2). People of color weren't promoted to live in the suburbs in the late 1950s because others thought it wouldn't be suitable for the colored society to move in.
In the 1940’s (when A Lesson Before Dying took place) segregation and Jim Crow laws were no stranger and neither were specific roles for each gender. For white people, men were expected to work and pay the bills, while women took care of house chores and the children. This was not the case for the African American community, and the book clearly shows it. In chapter 8, Grant describes what his old teacher was like and the lessons he tried to teach his students. He kept telling them to run away and find freedom, because if they do not, then they will end up in the circle.
As a young girl, it did not take Davis long to realize the difference between people in her neighborhood. Skin color not yet a factor in her eyes, little Angela attributed these’s people’s differences to their lack of general politeness and intense negative energy portrayed to her family, and other Black families that later moved into her neighborhood.
