Savage. Primitive. Barbaric. All adjectives used to describe the tribes occupying Germania. Though peace reigned for many years between the two, conflict was sure to rise and did. Famously known as the Crisis of the Third Century, the Holy Roman Empire was beleaguered with civil war, plagues, and economic depression the Goths used this downfall of Rome as an advantage to pillage the Empire. Rome; however, wanted to maintain amity and strained to do to so by “paying for peace” but, soon stopped turning to confrontation and war (22).
