One of the well-known, if not, notably the most known tragedy is Romeo and Juliet. In the Elizabethan tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, written by the notorious William Shakespeare; The play is known to be about two young teenagers, Romeo and Juliet, that timely stumble across each other and fall in love. Romeo Montague, whom’s name sounds like romance, is the one and only intelligent sixteen-year-old son of the Montague family (“Romeo and Juliet Facts | Britannica”), leaving him to be the family’s pride and joy. Juliet Capulet, a young naive thirteen-year-old daughter of the Capulet family (“Romeo and Juliet Facts | Britannica”), is the sole daughter and last hope of the House of Capulet. Romeo is only interested in being physically intimate with Rosaline, so she rejects him and leaves Romeo gloomy. After being rejected by Rosaline, Romeo is miserable: “To merit bliss by making me despair / she hath forsworn to love, and in that vow,” (1.1.230-232). Romeo says that Rosaline will reach heaven while being pure and innocent, while being a virgin. That causes Romeo to be hopeless and swears not to love as he vows it, yet after Romeo goes to the Capulet ball, he meets Juliet. Romeo sees Juliet for the first time and instantly falls for Juliet, “Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight, / For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night,” (1.5.59-60). The moment Romeo lays his eyes on Juliet, he claims that his heart has not fluttered for anyone before. He calls Juliet beautiful and swears that it is a breathtaking sight, ultimately taking action as they inevitably fall for each other, but if Juliet rejected Romeo’s love for her, Romeo would just go to another woman and declare his love for them again, given his patterns. On the other hand, others might argue that Romeo never truly loved Rosaline as he never tried to marry her, so Romeo’s past love for Rosaline has nothing to do with Romeo taking the blame for many deaths. Romeo is banished from Verona and is currently in Mantou, but when he hears the news that Juliet is presumably dead, he is frantic and rushes to be by her side. Along the way, he buys poison to accompany Juliet in the after world, “Come hither, man. I see that thou art poor. / Hold, there is forty ducats. Let me have / A dram of poison, such soon-speeding gear / As will disperse itself through all the veins, / That the life-weary taker may fall dead,” (5.1.62-66). When Romeo arrives at the apothecary’s shop, he demands for a poison strong enough to take place immediately, eventually spreading the toxin through all the veins. The apothecary, who is a druggist, is too poor to refuse the sale. Forty ducats to him is a lot, leaving him with no choice, but to sell the poison to Romeo. After he buys the poison, Romeo rushes to the Capulet tomb to see Juliet. Upon seeing her, Romeo is hit with a wave of grief and curls over to mourn her body, but Juliet is not actually dead yet. Romeo is seen acknowledging Juliet’s face as it still contains life, “Thou art not conquered. Beauty’s ensign yet / Is crimson in thy lips and in thy cheeks,” (5.3.94-95). It has been a while after Juliet’s death was announced, yet her cheeks are still rosy and her lips are still bright, meaning Juliet is still alive.
