Many people try to change or alter their fate; however, the consequences for doing so are catastrophic. In the story of Romeo and Juliet, fate was a prevalent occurrence. The two star crossed lovers could not escape their destiny, fate set their undying love to an end in death. The short story, “Monkey's Paw” is a great example of how you can not change fate. Just like Romeo and Juliet, the “Monkey's Paw” ended in a tragic death. The theme of the “Monkey Paw” is that fate is unchangeable. Fate should not be changed because of the terrible consequences that might follow. A great example of this would be the play “Oedipus”. When Oedipus was born he revealed a prophecy that Oedipus would slay his father and marry his mother. After hearing this, his father banished him and demanded that he be killed as a baby. Instead of killing Oedipus, he leaves him on a mountain with a shepherd. Oedipus grew up and later in his life, not knowingly, he killed his father, Laius, King of Thebes, making himself king. He then marries the queen, which turns out to be his mother. This is a prime example of how fate is predetermined because no matter what Laius did to prevent this prophecy, Oedipus still killed him and married his mother. In conclusion, the theme of this story is that fate is unchangeable. This is because everything happens for a reason, fate is predetermined, and of the terrible consequences that might follow. People always try to change their fate, but it's not worth it. People can not escape their destiny, no matter how hard they try.
