Freedom is a unique privilege that most humans find themselves looking for. The standard individual is born to crave adrenaline rushes, thrilling adventures, and satisfaction through self-determination. People tend to search for freedom through unconventional means, in hopes of an escape from the habitual patterns of life. They find it intriguing that they want what they cannot have, and search for this unattainable aspect in hopes of discovering a piece of self-identity. This freedom can be unfortunate, however, and be the springboard for negative actions or rebellion. It can be a force of one’s structured life and fate, which emphasizes the social standards one must comply with (a forced marriage, job, or any other similar circumstance). Each of these characters presents righteous intentions, exemplifying love and loyalty in hopes of being with each other. The way this leads to actions of resentment shows how they acquire similar characteristics. For instance, Juliet goes against her parents when she is “forced” to marry Paris. With the help of the Friar and Nurse, she lies about going to confession and marries Romeo instead. After Juliet fakes her whereabouts, the Nurse reflects on her joyful expression, noting, “See where she comes from shrift with a merry look”(4.2.15). The nurse knew about their marriage but was helping Juliet play along with the lie. Juliet tried to seem desperate and as if she was asking for forgiveness/repentance, conflicting with what she was supposed to do. In regards to Romeo, he had a similar situation when he was forced to be exiled. Prohibited from entering Verona, the young man devises a plan anyway, by the orders of the Friar, to meet Juliet.
