‘Romeo and Juliet’ is a play written by Shakespeare about 2 people that would do anything to be together. People that know about the storyline argue that it is either a romance or a tragedy. I strongly believe that the play is a romance because that is the main theme is love. Everything that has happened to Romeo and Juliet was because of the romance between them. Things only happen for a reason and what Romeo and Juliet went through happened because they had obstacles in the way of them. The main storyline is Romeo and JUliet loving each other and trying to find a way to end up together, so I classify the play as a romance. ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is a romance because they met because of love. They both killed themselves because they couldn’t bare not living without one another. In Act 5, Scene 3 Romeo sees Juliet lying in the grave and he immediately drinks the poison so that he doesn’t have to live without her. He dies as he kisses Juliet and lies next to her because it is the last time he get’s to see her. There is an oxymoron in Act 5, Scene 3 and Juliet says “O happy dagger.” This is when Juliet is about to kill herself and it accentuates her willingness to take her own life. She is grateful that Romeo had his dagger so that she could kill herself and be with Romeo in spirit. The effect this technique has on the audience is that they would do anything to be with each other and they cannot imagine living without one another. They died loving each other right until the end where they both took their life and ended their time on
