Romeo and Juliet is known to be the greatest love story of all time. The love Romeo and Juliet shared is one known around the world. However, there is a reason that Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy, not a romance. The ever present feud between the Capulet and the Montague families is a constant factor throughout the play. No choice is made without those names on the brain. It does not matter whether your name is Capulet, Montague, or even if you are just a friend. This feud, from so long ago, is grounds for the deaths of Mercutio, Tybalt, and ultimately Romeo and Juliet.
After crashing the Capulet party, Tybalt is thirsty for revenge. He summons Romeo to a duel but Romeo, smitten with Juliet, decides that he will not harm her cousin. It can only be proven to be a myth. However, in the case of Romeo and Juliet, it is evident that love at first sight does indeed exist. Knowing nothing about each other might have been the greatest gift that they could have been given. Realizing that they were from feuding families did not act as a deterrence from love. Both Romeo and Juliet threatened to commit suicide while the other one was gone. When Romeo arrives back in Verona and sees Juliet dead he can go on no longer and whispers his final words in the ear of his beloved. “Thus with a kiss I die” (Shakespeare V. iii. 120). ‘Till death do us part. These five words are the foundation of the love that Romeo and Juliet shared. Their love contradicts their entire existence. They are born to hate each other.
