The Inevitable Tragedy: Do you believe that your life is completely in the hands of fate? Or do you believe that you hold the power to control the course of your life? Perhaps even a little bit of both? In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, we are presented with a tragic love story of two young, star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet, who end up dying out of love for each other. The story of their forbidden love due to their opposing families takes place in Verona, Italy, several hundred years ago. The story sparks many questions about fate and free will and often makes it appear as if they are going hand in hand. Romeo’s banishment is one of the times we can really see the control fate has on the story. He is banished from Verona by the Prince for killing Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin.You might think that this could’ve been avoidable if Romeo had behaved differently, but you’ll see why Romeo’s actions were not even entirely his decision. Romeo’s banishment was unavoidable for the same reason that Tybalt’s death was. Both happened because Romeo believed it was destiny for Tybalt to die that day. He says “This day’s fate on more days doth depend. This begins the woe others must end.” (3.1.124-25). This shows that he believes that it is fate to kill Tybalt at that moment, and that is why he does so, instead of thinking about what would be the best decision at that moment. We can see from this that Romeo believes in fate, and acts upon what he thinks fate would want. This really shows how fate is controlling the story because it’s as if it wasn’t even Romeo making the decision to kill Tybalt, but fate itself. Juliet didn’t try to take any immediate action after his banishment either, since she too believed that Romeo’s banishment was part of his
