As author Nicole Gulla once said, “Even though we were never supposed to be together I can’t be with anyone else, no matter the consequences.” This quote relates to both the movie “West Side Story” directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins in 1961, and the play Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare in which both of the relationships in these stories were strictly forbidden, but still occurred and formed through the acts of them only seeing each other a handful of times. The Montagues and Capulets don’t relate at all to the Sharks and Jets being less fortunate, they were extremely wealthy for their time. The Montagues and Capulets expressed there wealth in the prologue ( Act 1) of Romeo and Juliet where it stated “two houses both alike in dignity.” This meant that since they were both alike in dignity they had a great amount of wealth and power equally. The Capulets for example, were also able to throw a huge party which meant they had a good amount of money to be hosting it. The Jets displayed their poverty and struggle in the song “Gee, Officer Krupke” where they sing,”It’s just our bringin’ upke that gets us out of hand, our mothers are junkies, our fathers are drunks, golly Moses natcherly we’re punks.” The Jets are explaining how they were born into being a punk because of their parents behavior and were destined to be poor. At the dance where you see the Sharks and Jets together in the movie, Maria and Tony meet for the first time. Bernardo who is often angry and on edge saw them together and immediately tried to stop it. Bernardo said,“Stay away from my sister!” This was said directly to Tony’s face while he was dancing with Maria. The scene where Romeo and Juliet meet differs in many ways. Tybalt who is similar in character to Bernardo for being hot headed, saw Romeo at the Capulet party and thought he was mocking the Capulets. Tybalt says to Capulet, “Uncle, this is a Montague, our foe, a villain that is hither come in spite to scorn at our solemnity this night.”(Act 1, Scene 5, Line 69) Capulet responds with just let him be but Tybalt insisting he confront Romeo. Tybalt finally accepts Capulets wishes of not disturbing the party. Tybalt’s reaction to Romeo coming to the party didn’t result in him confronting Romeo and asking him to leave like Bernardo did to Tony. In contrast, Bernardo was able to confront Tony and told him to get away from his sister whereas Tybalt didn’t have that power in the play Romeo and
