“You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.” Dr. Seuss once said. This statement can be used to examine not only modern literature, but also literature of the past. More importantly, it can be applied to the Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, one of the most well known pieces of writing regarding love, to determine its purpose. Moreover, it can also show whether Shakespeare was successful in achieving this purpose.
In order to depict many different images of love, William Shakespeare writes about the challenges of love between Romeo and Juliet. The playwright presents several aspects of love, such as unrequited, parental, and romantic love. Shakespeare’s message, while originating in the 1500s, is not unique to themes of love. In fact, this theme resurfaces many times throughout the history of literature. For instance, Zora Neale Hurston visualizes different images of love in her 1937 novel Their Eyes Were Watching God.
Juliet started to change once she met Romeo at her father’s masquerade ball and realized that she loved him and wanted to cherish him, even though she said to herself that she wasn’t looking for love anytime soon. In act 1, scene 3, line 100 Juliet says, “But no more deep will I endear mine eye.” Juliet will acknowledge Paris as a person but will not look at him as a lover. In act 2, scene 2, line 140 Juliet says, “The more I have, for both are infinite.”
Romeo and Juliet's love was very strong, regardless of the way that their families were foes and had numerous lethal feuds previously. Romeo had snuck into a Capulet family get-together where he saw his love at first sight Juliet. This love story was loaded with numerous profitable life lessons about what love can do and how it can change a person. Shakespeare demonstrates how love can change a person through character development, character interactions, and dialogue. I based my transformative text around the main concept of Romeo and Juliet’s love story as it is the basis for the play and a key concept. I chose to mainly focus on the party scene which is act 1 scene 5, the balcony scene act 2 scene 2 and other aspects in short like their marriage and their eventual death acts. I chose these scenes and aspects as they were the most instrumental in building the relationship between Romeo and Juliet, and also developing the idea of fate and star crossed lovers. Fate plays a large role in the original text, Romeo and Juliet are referred to as star crossed lovers in the prologue,
Love is boundless and unmeasurable. Love also is subjective: there is no true definition of love, however it seems as though it can be detected once formed. As one thinks of “Romeo and Juliet”, love is often associated, so much, to the fact that the tragedy is forgotten. “Romeo and Juliet” is derived from Arthur Brooke’s “The Tragicall Historye of Romeus and Juliet”, written in 1563, thirty-four years before Shakespeare’s version. The two versions are almost exactly identical with the exception of a three details.
Juliet’s personality develops hugely from the outset to the end of the play. She transitions from this young naïve law-abiding 13 year old to a cunning love struck grown up girl. The opening prologue gives a lot of the story away, without taking the suspense away. The chorus informs the audience that Romeo and Juliet are ‘star-crossed lovers’ implying that the couple are governed by fate and somehow linked to the movements of the stars. The Elizabethan period was very patriarchal and a way that Shakespeare exemplifies this is by making Capulet have absolute power over his wife and daughter or so he thinks.
Secondly, Romeo’s death causes a major shift in the way people live would live in the future. After Romeo and Juliet’s death, the Capulet and Montague promise to quit fighting each other. In the beginning of the play, we learn how the enmity between had gone an extent where the frustrated Prince decided that anyone involved in another Capulet vs Montague riot would be executed. The main reason behind Romeo and Juliet keeping their marriage secret was due to being part of enemy houses. They felt afraid to go against their parents hatred of the other family.

Romeo and Juliet did not seem bothered by the fact that their love could result in severe consequences for the people around them. The risk that they take constantly leads to people’s lives being taken, their own internal family struggles and trouble with the police. However, they were willing to sacrifice all of those things for the satisfaction love gives. Love is apart of everyone’s life. It influences people’s decisions, attitude and relationships.
Another way to portray the scene would be to update the play to modern times and change the balcony scene to one that happens over the phone, and by changing the script to one with more modern language. I believe it would still show the scene correctly by having Juliet in her room and Romeo in the Capulet’s garden. Something similar to this: On one side of the stage would show Juliet in her room, talking on the phone to Romeo. I see her lounging on her bed, as one might see a teenager in a commercial. By creating a room using a wall, it would allow for Juliet to appear higher up, with the use of windows on the wall.
People always strive to become something better than they are, create something more meaningful, or pure. However, in the play Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare shows that ideal love cannot survive in our world without consequences. Regardless of how passionate a love is, it will inevitably be changed or in some cases destroyed. Whether it is death, heartbreak, or simply falling out of love, it takes its toll. Shakespeare has a very interesting view of love which can be interpreted in many ways.
Romeo and Juliet, the story where two forbidden lovers take their own lives for the sake of love. Within this story Shakespeare shows multiple kinds of love that everyone experiences in life, and within this essay i will be talking about two. The two main types of love i noticed in Shakespeare’s story “Romeo and Juliet”, were Unrequited love and obviously, the main focus, romantic love. These two types of loves have their share of differences but surprisingly they have their similarities as well. The first type of love shown in Romeo and Juliet is unrequited love.
Juliet shows very less respect toward her parents and thinks that the time is in her favor. Juliet, in the beginning, would have showed much more respect that the Juliet at the end, and her change caused by her love. In conclusion, Juliet definitely changed a lot from how she was in the beginning of the book to how she acted towards the end of the book. She made decisions like committing suicide, fighting with her parents, and considering all the factors when making a decision.
