Romeo and Juliet is a play about star-crossed lovers. Romeo is apart of a high class Montague family; their rival is the Capulet family. Romeo falls in love with the daughter of Lord Capulet. They want to get married but they know that this will not be approved between their family feud. This is why they secretly ask Friar Laurence to marry them in secret.

Romeo, an overly dramatic character, is one who does not think things through. Romeo’s death was caused due to Friar Laurence, who failed to send a letter informing Romeo that Juliet was simply in a death like sleep. Romeo, being one to jump to solutions stated, ‘Noting this penury, to myself I said, “ An if a man did need a poison now”… (Shakespeare 5:1 Lines 51-52)’.
An overwhelming amount of crimes that are committed are motivated by hatred. The behavior portrayed in both stories was motivated by hate and lead to heinous outcomes. In Romeo and Juliet, by Shakespeare, Romeo was pushed to his limits when his friend Mercutio was killed. Even the most civil people can surprise you when their actions are motivated by hate. In Saki’s short story “The Interlopers”, Ulrich and Georg continued their hate for each other in a life-threatening situation.
Immaturity can spread throughout things and people creating problems for the present and future. Similarly, Romeo and Juliet not only shows the development of love, but the development of immaturity that leads to the story being tragic. Often humans develop to become mature, but the totalness of immaturity in this story, makes the process go backwards. From Romeo and Juliet’s fast evolving relationship to the hate between the two family’s, the ignorance of thought in different characters is portrayed well in the story. Therefore, the theme of this sad story is to think more diligently and reasonably before taking action, and overall grow from the past.

Throughout the play Romeo develops, affects other main characters, and expresses a common theme within the story. This is what makes him a great example of a complex character in the story of Romeo and Juliet.
