In the world we live today many question the New Deal that Franklin Delano Roosevelt presented as he took office in 1933. His main goal of introducing and enacting the new deal was to help the millions of suffering americans during the great depression. However, question have been rising as if The New Deal helped or not. To begin with, the majority of individuals view The New Deal as the main core thing that helped America get out of the main depression. Although, this may have some truth to it, author Adolph Reed Jr. challenges this viewpoint in his article “Race and the New deal Coalition.”
But unfortunately the reality was that the minorities had much harder times than white Americans. In 1933, the general unemployment rate in the United States was over 25 percent; at the same time, unemployment rates for various American minorities ranged up to 50 percent or more (“Great Depression and the New Deal Reference Library”1). Racial discrimination was high and minorities were the first to loose their jobs during the Great Depression. They were denied to work. They were often denied employment in public works programs, they were sometimes threatened at relief centers when applying for work or assistance, and even some charities refused to provide food to needy minorities, especially to blacks in the South.
The programs created by the New Deal satisfied the needs of citizens, even though several thought Roosevelt was overstepping his power. Roosevelt’s administration was not very effective in ending the Great Depression, however, some of the programs did help relieve

During the years of the Progressive era and the New Deal period, the United States saw a lot of intervention by the government, specifically focused on the working and living conditions of those in poverty. Both periods were focused in helping the everyday man get what he needs and had primarily no focus on the social, economic, and political rights for African-Americans. Differences include the fact that Progressive focus concerning the work field was more about fixing the conditions for everyone; men, women, and children alike, but the New Deal’s focus was more on getting men back in work. The success of the programs and policies seemed to coincide with the feeling of the period. Roosevelt’s purpose of presenting this speech was to persuade the audience to behave like the strong men they are but with decency and manners because, in the 1900s, men behaved in a very manly fashion. However, men lacked manners and morality. Due to the very questionable propriety of men, Roosevelt was driven to address how men should act the way a real mature man would in order to further improve society. By using rhetorical strategies such as repetition, Christian appeal, and a serious tone, Roosevelt is able to show his audience how strength and decency go hand in hand.
