The story “Into the Gorge” by Ron Rash was my favorite story in the text. The story provided setting that sustained the mood of mystery. It started with narrating the story of Jesse’s aunt and her mysterious death. Then, the story took place in the woods. The description of how Jesse interacted with the land conveyed his relationship to his father.
The story is about a man named Lennie and the struggles he goes through while living with his best friend George. Some of the struggles Lennie goes through is learning that everyone isn’t as kind and as respectful as him. The challenges Lennie and everyone else has to go through is hate and discrimination. One of the people that work there deals with racism and segregation because of the color of his skin. Lennie, George and a old man named Candy plan to leave the Ranch and live their own life on their rules.
She was all alone thinking that she has no place to go to. As the bus came to a stop, she was led to the hotel door and all the way up to the thirtieth floor. A boy that led her to her room and spent a while showing her all the particular functions of it. She was puzzled by this, but that was the last thing on her mind. Before he left, he stood at the door and politely asked for a tip.
The men of the group, much like John in “The Yellow Wallpaper,” consider themselves more capable than the women and refuse to consider Mrs. Wright as anything other than irrational. The men leave the women to their “trifles” on the first floor, where they discover a broken bird cage, and the bird’s body, broken, carefully wrapped in a small, decorative box. They realize that Mr. Wright had wrung the neck of his wife’s beloved bird and broken its cage. Mrs. Wright, once known for her cheerfulness and beautiful singing, she stopped singing when she encountered Mr. Wright. Just like he did with the bird, Mr. Wright choked the life out of his wife until, finally, Mrs. Wright literally choked the life out of her husband.
After that she asked him was he hungry. Roger told her that he wasn’t hungry. She told Roger that if he wanted a new pair of shoes he could’ve just asked. Then she cooked for him because she knew she was hungry. Mrs. Jones asked him if he had anybody at home that would’ve taught him better.
The film Rope takes place in the year it was created, 1948. It begins in Brandon’s (John Dall) studio apartment where he and his best friend (and theoretical lover), Philip (Farley Granger) have just committed the “perfect murder” (Hitchcock, Rope). The rest of their evening is plotted around exhibiting their murder as if it's a work of art, with the victim’s family and friends as spectators. Brandon believes himself to be a superior human, thus being the reason he was so easily able to pull of the perfect murder.
Outside of the train station there was a beaded curtain, “Close against the side of the station was the warm shadow of the building and a curtain, made of strings of bamboo beads, hung across the open door into the bar, to keep the flies out” (Hemingway line 3-5). The beaded curtain is used as a symbol to show the separation between them and the rest of humanity. The beaded curtain is supposed to represent boundaries. The couple faces many boundaries throughout the short story, these boundaries act as a curtain in the couple’s relationship that limit their options and conversation on the topic of whether to abort their child or not. Bamboo stem was once said to have been what humanity was created from; the couple sat just outside the beaded curtain never passing through
This is a great example of her knowing that her father and brothers rely on her and her mother to do all the chores. With the young sixteen year old girl, she was involved in an arranged marriage with an older man. The older man had given her this stunning ring one night. At the end of the night she had taken it off her finger and placed it down. In the morning she could not find it, and had informed her husband that she had no idea where it went.
She took one look and tells them that he is a angel who must have came for his son. She insisted on them to club him. But they didn’t have a heart to club him so they do the next worst thing they dragged him out of the mud and locked him up with the hens in the wire chicken coop. Instead of the conflict of the story being between a husband and wife, the conflict is between a mother and a daughter. In the beginning of the story, we can see the obvious conflict between the two. The mother is what one might consider to be strict or abusive or maybe even just tough love. Many times, throughout the story, the mother is said to have hit or choked her daughter. Because of this, the daughter has turned into a disobedient girl and will do anything to go against the wishes of her mother.
The story “Yours” by Mary Robinson is a short story about a married couple spending their Halloween evening together before the death of his young wife. His wife was suffering from cancer. The story starts with Allison, the wife, coming in from getting pumpkins for the evening events with her husband. She walks through their home where she finds the mail. She finds a letter from her husband’s relatives who saying awful things.
This story is about a beautiful, tempting woman whom’s husband loves her. He speaks so highly of her and then that turns around and bites him in the butt. She is cheating on him. Her other man wants to have this fancy meal so she convinces her husband to go out and get her all of this food because she “wants to have company”. She tells the other man that she will just give him the food she cooked and pull one over on her husband.
