“Marriage is the legal or formal union of two people as partners in a relationship” (Dictionary.com, 2015). Marriage is one of those things that can be interpreted in many different ways. All around the world, marriage is unique and individual as the culture it comes from. Certain cultures perform marital traditions that may seem questionable and outrageous, but to them, it helps ensure a happy and lifelong marriage. With many similarities, marriage practiced worldwide is bound to have its differences. The cross-cultural practices of marriage allows researchers to differentiate what each culture or customs performs within their society. In this paper, I will explain how different cultures express their opinions and actions of love.

Evolutionary psychologists have stated that romantic love serves an evolutionary function as an affective “glue” that binds people together for a long enough time to feed, nurture, and instruct children to an age where they can begin to care for themselves (Buss 2006; Chisholm 1993; Fisher 2004, 1992). Love can bring people together. The Russian and American culture can strongly agree with what was said above. Not all things of this nature can be agreed upon. Some believe that in the Russian culture, love is weak and vulnerable. But to love it the greatest gift there is. The American culture has taken significant steps to ensure the equality of love. In this very year, same sex marriage was finally legalized in all fifty states. With this seeming scandalous or astonishing, America embraces its originality. Anyone can discriminate a certain style of marriage because they have grown accustomed to their particular way of life. I am sure many people around the world also think this way.
