The SAT is now an essential for high school students to be admitted in to the realm of post-secondary schooling. A test of this magnitude combined with the increasing competition in college admissions should have test scores increasing as each year passes, but instead, a reverse trend is occurring. The average SAT scores have been dropping in the last four decades and in particular the SAT Critical Reading. These drastic decrease in the Critical Reading scores can be attributed to changes in demographics and the advancement of technological goods. Many reasons can be attributed to the drop in scores of the Critical Reading section of the SAT. The students while working on homework such as reading or writing essentially drop everything they are doing when their phone vibrates. The students distracted by technology do not fully concentrate on the studying that goes into preparing for the SAT. The lack of concentration directly downsizes the potential for good scores. Technology also has become the principle medium through which people pass their time. People, including students, watch television, play video games, text on cellphones, and surf the internet to pass time, whereas people four decades ago read books and did other activities because they did not have a majority of the technology that is present today. With the limitation of reading and writing to class assignments, students do not get practice of English and its accompanying comprehension skills. The lack of self practice deprives the students from skills that will aid them in the standardized test.
