The 2016 presidential election was probably one of the biggest elections of our time. The showdown between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton was nothing like we ever seen before in a presidential election. The hostile nature of both of their campaigns intensified the division of both sides. Donald Trump ran a campaign on a movement, He also ran a populist campaign using the attention from the media to his advantage. He also capitalized off what he calls the silent majority where his message reached out to the most. His opponent Hillary Clinton just ran mostly on the fact Donald Trump wasn’t fit to be President. Trump did so well with the electoral college because he really focused his campaign on the people affected by the lost of industry in the rust belt states that. These states were Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania which were part of the so called “Blue Wall” for a while until the Trump flipped them in 2016. I think Hillary didn’t perform as well as she thought she was going to do in these states because polls showed that she was up by a lot in these states. Another factor would be her lack of appeal to the common American worker in the rust belt region which typically vote democratic. Not only did trump break the blue wall he also won key swing states such as Florida, Ohio, Iowa and North Carolina. Typically, a republican candidate would have needed to win one more traditional swing states to win the election but luckily, he won the rust belt. Hillary Clinton won Colorado, Nevada and Virginia which were also key swing states in the 2016 election, but they were not enough to carry her to an electoral victory. Although Hillary Clinton didn’t win the electoral college she did win the nation’s popular vote by roughly 2.9 million votes. Hillary Clinton was able to achieve this because more urban areas with high populations tended to lean liberal. This is significant but winning these areas isn’t enough for someone to get elected as president.
