A2d: SMART Leadership Development Goals In order to be a more effective leader, I need to develop my professional interpersonal skills. Specifically, I need to develop assertiveness, a new and more positive outlook on employee recognition, and a better manner in which to confront disgruntled employees or customers. My estimated time of completion of this goal will be two months. At this time, I will measure my success by conducting a mock trial that entails scenarios that involve communicating with others. For example, a sample scenario might involve me having to place an employee on probation for acting unsafely at the workplace. Specifically, I need to allow my mind to be open to accepting a more participative style of leadership, which I believe is actually more effective than simply relying on myself to make all the decisions. My estimated time of completion of this goal will be three weeks. At this time, I will measure my success by conducting a group discussion where a common company problem will be presented, in which we need to develop a response together, instead of from only receiving my input. I will be graded (by a fellow leader) based on my reactions to other group members' inputs, as well as my ability to understand why they feel that their solutions work the best. I will also be graded based on the level of support I give the group, and on the limited amount of interruptions I have on the group during the meeting. I believe that this is an attainable goal because the only real effort that I'll need to work on is focusing on listening more intently and actively. It is also very relevant to my development as a leader because it will help to decrease my competitive and anti-social side, and will increase my cooperative and collaborative sides, which can boost my professional relationships, and subordinate motivation and morale.
