To Kotter the purpose of leadership is to propel an organization into the future by finding opportunities and successfully exploiting them. Effective leading is having a vision and being able to get buy in from people and by empowering them, one can create substantial change (CITE KOTTER HBR 2). It is also important to note that Kotter describes leaderships as strategic procedures that makes an organization adaptable to substantial change (CITE). With this purpose and definition in mind, one can hypothesize that to successfully lead during change a leader needs to; have a future expressed by a vision, align employees to the vision and empower them to overcome problems related to the transition in implementing change.
The five parts to the leadership are model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable other to act, and encourage the heart. The first practice is model the way. Martin Luther King Jr. represented model the way by setting examples, being a role model, and having numerous personal achievements. Another challenge of this assignment is to write goals for improvement of my leadership style. I will be using the SMART goal format. SMART goals are written in a specific format to have all the components of a well-written goal. This type of goal setting allows a person or team to be focused on the outcome and not be distracted by a poorly written abstract of a goal. Two SMART goals that I will focus on to improve my leadership are developing my EI and seeking understanding first.
Through experience we develop and hone our leadership proficiency. I will set goals in the following three areas, to continue my growth and serve our team as a leader in the organization. 1. Leaders inspire commitment, and know they cannot command it. I will describe a compelling image of what our future could be like.
In my 7 habits profile, I discussed wanting to work on two habits for specific reasons. The two habits that I talked about working on are my P/PC balance, and habit three. I still want to work on these because they are important to my physical and mental wellbeing, which are both very important to me. I still want to take action on both of these because improving my health and having a healthy life is important to me. There are many benefits to having a healthy mind, including better relationships with most people, better mindsets and healthier body, and better impressions on people which could help with job interviews.
I view myself as a capable leader, however the time in this course has taught me I have areas I need to improve. In the next three to five years, I will apply leadership concepts I have learned here at Intermediate Leadership Experience (ILE), to improve my leadership qualities. This vision statement’s ultimate goal is to improve my leadership skills. I’m going discuss how I see myself as a leader, how I’m going to improve over the next three to five years and how I want to be viewed as a leader.
The three skills are Leads, Develops, and Achieves. I try to use this method of leadership when leading others I influence and motivate them to pursue the goal. Also by leading from the form and doing setting the standard. Secondly, when developing my subordinates, I try to implement a positive environment so that all my soldiers can flourish and work as a team. A positive environment helps encourage soldiers to take the initiative and may cause them to want to work harder to gain more individual responsibility.
Throughout my entire life I have been constantly learning and improving a wide range of personal and social leadership skills, especially in these most recent few years of middle school and high school. These skills have not only helped me to get where I am today, but have also become a huge influence for my personality and overall perception of the world around me. These skills have helped me to build relationships, gain experience and opportunities, improve my personal outlook, and change my entire approach to everything I do in a positive way. But I know it does not stop there. It is never truly possible to fully possess a leadership skill in its entirety.
In fact, leadership is an art rather than a science. The process of learning leadership is a hand-on experience, which focuses on practice instead of concepts itself.
