The difference between a good and bad leader manifests itself in the habits and actions of that leader. Often, a good leader practices virtues that naturally draw others to them while constantly guiding their subordinates through physical and moral hardship. They uplift those around them, ensure the growth of their subordinates, and maintain a healthy climate of dignity and respect. Meanwhile, a bad leader creates a toxic environment, one that may be exclusive, harmful, or demeaning. Bad leaders, such as those observed in The Kunk Gun, Alpha, and Platoon, engage in vices that harm their ability to effectively lead.
At the age of 25 Colonel Robert Gould Shaw leadership philosophy made him capable of commanding a fresh regiment of recruits and turned them into an effective fighting force. I believe Colonel Shaw was a true leader because he looked after his subordinates with out any regard to the obstacles and prejudices. The veterans who survived the wars and came home were not met with compassion, instead they were rejected by the masses because they saw the war as unjust and no interest to the United States. One common issue with popular leadership literature is there are often claims made without sufficient evidence to back them up (Dye, 2017). With popular leadership literature, it is vital to make there is valid evidence to support all leadership claims. Without this support, it's difficult to determine whether the ideas apply to effective leadership (Dye, 2017). One way I can become a better critical consumer in my field is to do my research and fact-check claims before incorporating any ideas into my leadership style.
