The Safe Patient Handling Act (A.1370/S.2470)
The bill was introduced by a Chair of the Subcommittee on Workplace Safety, Assemblyman Rory Lancman, and Senator George Maziarz, the sponsor the Safe Patient Handling Act (A.1370/S.2470). This bill would (1) create a safe patient handling taskforce, (2) direct the New York State Department of Health to establish a safe patient handling policy, and (3) require each covered healthcare facility to write and execute a plan that coincides with that policy. The Subcommittee on Workplace Safety considers passing the bill a top priority for the 2011-2012 legislative sessions.

For health care facilities, safe patient handling programs increase, the quality of care for patients, increases employees retention rates, reduces injuries to workers, which reduces worker compensation claims, lost days and lawsuits.
