Saint Cecilia, Patroness of Musicians

Saint Cecilia was born some time in the 2nd century, in Rome, Italy. The exact date is unknown. She was not known in Rome until about the time when Pope Gelasius introduced her name into his Sacramentary in 496. She came from an extremely wealthy family and was given in marriage to a youth by the name of Valerian. She was arrested and was to be suffocated in the baths. She was shut in for a night and a day. Fires heaped up and stoked to a terrifying heat, but Saint Cecilia did not even sweat. An executioner was sent to cut off her head in the baths. She wore sackcloth next to her skin. Sackcloth was typically a coarse material usually made of black goat’s hair, making it quite uncomfortable to wear. By wearing this, it showed that she wanted to show her repentant heart. She fasted and invoked the saints, angels, and virgins, beseeching them to guard her virginity. During her wedding ceremony, she was said to have sung in her heart to God. Because of this, she is known as the patroness of musicians. She spent her life preaching and was able to convert over four hundred people. She was very close to God and prayed often.

I am like Saint Cecilia because she is the patroness of musicians. I am a musician like her. She played the organ, which is like the piano. I have played piano for over ten years. I played flute for 5 years and violin for 2 years. I want to learn from this saint because she committed her life to the Lord and I would like to devote more of my life to Him. I want to be more close to God and pray more often like she did in her life.

In conclusion, Saint Cecilia has done much for her religion to show that she is a saint worthy of imitation. Although she already came from a wealthy family, she was still generous and giving to those in need. She preached to many and converted over four hundred people. Personally, she is an example for me to follow in my daily life. I want to imitate her closeness to God and devote more of my life to the
