Honor can be defined as high respect, as for worth, merit, or rank. In my eyes, honor is integrity, pride, respect, and honesty.
Sally Ride is definitely a person worth honoring. Sally Kristen Ride, born on May 26, 1951 in Los Angeles, became the 1st American women in space. Although she is mostly known for her adventures in space starting in 1983, she went on to accomplished much more. Sally joined NASA in 1978. She not only was the 1st American women in space but she was also the youngest at age 32. She went on two expeditions and was scheduled for a third. She helped gather data and helped early scientist understand outer space. Sally got married in 1981 to a fellow NASA astronaut, Steve Hawley. She had to write and keep things classified for her work and job. She had to help with top secret government assignments. When Sally passed away from pancreatic cancer on July 23 in 2012, only a handful of friends and family knew about her diagnosis. The most surprising secret that came out after Sally’s death was that even though she was divorced, she did have a lover. After her death, she finally came out in her obituary as a lesbian. She had a partner of 27 years named Tam O’ Shaughnessy. Turns out Sally Ride was more secretive than people even thought. Being a female astronaut was controversial at the time, but a gay female astronaut…..out of the question.
Sally and her partner, along with some other friends founded Sally Ride Science in 2001 to inspire young people in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). Sally was the CEO of the company until she passed away. With Tam being an award-winning writer of science books for children and Sally being...well...Sally, they were quite a pair. Regardless of their sexuality, the did do a lot for science and the growth of learning especially for kids and young adults. Sally also co-wrote 7 science books for children- To Space and Back (with Sue Okie); and Voyager; The Third Planet; The Mystery of Mars; Exploring Our Solar System; Mission Planet Earth; and Mission Save the Planet (all with Tam O’Shaughnessy).
