Satire In George Carlin's Black Comedy

The big question that majority of the people who watch comedy is, “How can a person write comedy about a serious issues without making light of the serious issue?” The answer is quite simple, because serious themes with comedy add richness to the piece because it allows the audience to have a well-needed break from horror or grief that comes about with daily lives and daily expectations and standards. While comedians will make everybody uncomfortable sooner or later, great comedians are playing a vital capacity in the public eye by holding up a mirror and constraining us to realize that we would often prefer to ignore the worst. Also, Carlin uses black comedy, which is dark comedy where a light humored touch is applied to very dark and serious subject matter in order to ease the pain or make some specific point by juxtaposing the humor and the sadness. Finally, for his third method he connects with the audience with topics he knows thoroughly and that the audience will trust coming from him. George is now deceased, but his comedy is still fresh and very opinionated in today’s social issues too. By definition black comedy is dark comedy with a little sweet touch in order to make light of the situation. Carlin never had any problem taking shots at someone the rest of the country loved, but what makes this bit fascinating is how much public opinion has come around to agreeing with Carlin’s side. In this special he talked about how “good” America is at war and attacking brown people. Why? Because we have a lot of practice since America likes to engage in hurting brown people. The black humor behind this is that we (Americans) have in fact bombed other countries that were anything but white, as in our own race. He says, “It’s the first war that’s on every channel EVEN cable. And it’s got good rating.” He makes light of the fact that we are at war, but hey at least its got good ratings and people are watching it. War is a touchy subject with people who have been affected by it and Carlin successfully makes the crowd laugh. Black comedy is just a slap in the face for the audience because everyone is a hypocrite. George also talked about abortion and how people are against it, but once you put yourself in the situation everyone’s opinion changes. He put a little bit of light on the fact that the world is already overpopulating so it shouldn’t be a fight between those who are for and against.
