The two stories illustrate that African-Americans are not given an equal chance in terms of gaining opportunities for a successful life. However, it may be possible that one key factor among all can develop a whole problematic image on success and why White Americans think of the African-American society as to not having the capability for a chance towards success. At the time, the economy could have been at a huge disadvantage for the African-Americans because majority of them did not have the chance to rise up from it in terms of creating revenue for themselves. The whole world around them built this image and it is hard to come out of when no one can give opportunities for them to improve and grow. Harlon L. Dalton expresses how unfair the
Lost in the Meritocracy: The Undereducation of an Overachiever by Walter Kirn is the story of Kirn’s experiences throughout his education. Kirn is a boy from a small town in Minnesota who went on to graduate from Princeton and received the Keasbey scholarship to Oxford. One would think that he is an extremely educated man because of these schools that he attended, but he spends most of the novel discussing how he did not really learn, he just knew how to work the system. This book raises questions about the effectiveness of the American school system and shows why it is both successful and futile. Walter Kirn knows that he did not get into Princeton due to his intellectual abilities, but because he understood how to take multiple choice tests.
When reading Chapter 5 “Craig Seganti on Taking charge in the classroom”, the overall chapter was interesting when it comes to managing a classroom. As a teacher, we want to be able to control the structure of a classroom, but at times is unable to accomplish the task due to our student’s behaviors. At the beginning of the chapter it states a productive classroom may have difficulties but it is the way a teacher present themselves along with the rules of the classroom determines the outcome of the student’s actions. When presenting to the students the rules of the classroom, the teacher needs to present the rules on the first day of school and have the students sign a copy to ensure they are aware of the information. When it comes to the
The work of Jerry Uelsmann explores and pushes the traditional boundaries of photography. For example, all of Uelsmann’s work is completed in the dark room. While other photographers in this era would use the darkroom just for printing purposes, Uelsmann used the darkroom as a place to express his creativity and manipulate his photos. According to the interview conducted in Black & White Magazine, Uelsmann is “A true darkroom alchemist, he combines light, chemistry and the base material of silver to conjure marvelous dreamscapes rich in symbolic and psychological meaning.” This quote helps explain Uelsmann’s process in the darkroom.
Unschooling is when the child/student takes more control of their learning experience and education. It is also called child-directed learning or self-learning. This word is a noun. The main point of unschooling is to take your child out of the sometimes harsh and politically biased, government school systems. The prefix un means not, this is shown in words like unexpected where the full word means not expected.
The group that I chose to observe consisted of four members. Three of the members were part of a family, including the mother, the older sister, and the younger brother. The fourth member I soon noted was the older sister’s friend who had tagged along. They had all come to Culver 's later in the evening to get ice cream a little after dinner time. As soon as they had found their table and sat down the mother had asked the three children what they would like to have.
To break down the main and most important elements, the author puts a strong amount of
In chapter six, “The Great and venerable Teacher” by Livia Kohn is about the difference in understanding nature and mankind. To understand the meaning of death means the meaning of life must be understood first. And with the knowledge of understanding both concepts, it is imperative to not confuse the concept of nature and mankind. In the beginning of the chapter, Kahn gives a scenario of four men Master Si, Master Yu, Master Li, Master Lai having the same belief of trusting the cycle of life and as a result they become friends.
1. What are the two critical elements to keep in mind when using instructional scaffolding? Modeling and Practice are the two critical elements to keep in mind when using instructional scaffolding. Modeling is when the teacher demonstrates or models each step in a task or strategy multiple times, so that through repetition and modeling the students understand both how to perform each step and why. Practice is when the students are allowed to either work individually or in groups with the teacher to practice a task or strategy.
CLR Teaching and Learning Book Report As I have read Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Teaching and Learning, by Sharroky Hollie, I now see how I can use this information to make connections within my classroom. This book has opened my eyes to see that a deficient mindset will create barriers in my future classroom. Having a CLR mindset will allow me to work with all students and their many different backgrounds. While I do not see my mindset as deficient, I did see that within these chapters I need to be more aware of the difference that could be in my classroom.
The "teachers" continued, at the 180 volts mark the "learner" cried out that he cannot take it any longer. Once reaching 300 volts, the fifty-year-old "learner" yelled about his heart condition and begged to be released. At these points, a decent amount of "teachers" halted the experiment while a large percent continued until the final 450 volt question even though the "learner" had stopped responding. At the 150 volt mark those who were going to stop, did so. If I were in this position I would stop at the first sign of discomfort from the "learner."
In this experiment, there were also two groups - the teacher and the student. The teacher would read a list of word pairs, and then begin testing the student, starting at 15 volts of shock, if the student got the question wrong, they would be shocked, with increasing voltage every time; if they got it right, they would not be shocked. In this experiment, experts believed that only “less than 1 percent would go all the way to the end [because] only sadists would engage in such sadistic behavior” (Zimbardo 271) However, they couldn’t be more wrong; 65% of the participants got up to 450 volts before they wanted to stop. The “teachers” were able to do this with little to no feelings of guilt, because after administering the shocks the first few times, it had become a habit. The experimenter remaining in the room was also a factor in this experiment because when the teachers would stop and beg to leave, the experimenter would say no.

Education can be explained as the process of acquiring knowledge, skills, values, beliefs and habits, and is the most valuable resource that one could have in life as, firstly, education facilitates learning and critical thinking, secondly, it allows for dreams of the future in terms of success to become a reality and lastly, it prevents the children of today from risking their future due to the influence of environmental hazards (Brooks, 2006). After studying the points discussed, it can be said that education plays an important role in the development of each and every human being and is not on categorized under scholarly education but rather any experience that allows an individual to broaden his/her knowledge. Amy Gutmann, an American political theorist proposed a theory surrounded around the democratic state of education requiring parents and states - to surrender some educational authority to professional education staffs’, also indicating that the children of today do not just benefit from freedom of choice, or identification with and participation in the positive aspects of their family and political aspects of the society. Amy’s theory is based on the characterisation of the three models of educational control namely Locke’s Theory of Parental control,
Reda (2015) states “If we want to see the world as a just and fair place where everyone is given equal opportunities, education is what we require. Education is a must if we want to do away with the existing differences between different social classes and genders. It opens a whole world of opportunities for the poor so that they may have an equal shot at well-paying jobs.” Creating education in a democratic state has been aimed by many states, theorists, philosophers and so on. Countries in this era have succeeded is aiming for a democratic education, some are getting there and other countries fail in creating a democratic education.
