What makes a person likeable? In the novel The Scorch Trials by James Dashner, I appreciate Thomas due to his natural passion for change; his thoughts and actions are controlled by his instinctive senses, his emotionally-centred ways, and his intellectually powerful decisions. Firstly, I feel that Thomas is a fairly instinctive character. Throughout the novel, he is described as a quick-thinking and intelligent individual who prioritizes a more time-consuming and well-thought-out plan over a messy scramble for freedom. I believe this is due to his futuristic and long-term thinking process as well as his desire to ensure success, which I admire. From previous horrors to upcoming ones, Thomas will always remember why he is where he is, and why. More so, there is always a spark of rage and hatred inside of him waiting to be fueled, further motivating him to make sense of any situation that arises. Thomas’ close friends mean the world to him and he can’t stand seeing them get hurt, let alone dying; this results in him constantly checking up on the group and their overall well-being. We can see Thomas’ deminor to take care of his friends when he sees Teresa for the first time excitedly and unexpectedly, though still has the courage to say, “No. You guys stay here…Maybe it’s a trap or something”(113). In having this extra sense of responsibility, I feel Thomas to have an inspiring personality. Lastly, although shown as a normally-witted person, I believe Thomas’ intelligence shines through his personality and binds all of his traits
